petronia: (tea or coffee?)
Text behind cuts contain various spoilers. XD

1) French manga griping: Nana 12 )

2) French manga griping: Bleach character profiles et al )

3) While trawling Chinese Bleach fandom I came across a scanlation of January Colour Bleach. I would like to take a moment to point out that Hitsugaya's photobook is a) titled The Lion in Winter and b) in its second print run. NOW HE IS JUST MOCKING US.

4) An observation regarding episode 65 of the Bleach anime filler arc that I am actually watching, on the principle that it is better than 50% of the fic I've read in the past two weeks and also has proper voice actors. )
petronia: (shinsenplushies)
For [livejournal.com profile] arisuesei, but I got her permission to post it to LJ immediately because I... I can't quite bring myself to send the same cards out, I'd have to buy Valentine Day ones at this rate. XD And also it's way too long. But I guess long isn't a bad trait in giftfic!?

I'm not sure I like this. ^^; Seduced by the concept to the detriment of characterization methinks. Take it as one version of what might have happened rather than the version... The title comes from the Ladytron track of the same name, which is actually one of my songcalls for Johan and Anna out of Monster. Which... I suppose that makes Aizen Franz Bonaparta? *crawls off and dies in a corner*

All The Way, Gin and Rangiku, 1861 words )

petronia: (sea and sky)
Cleaning out the mp3 folder at work and thus coming across stuff.

Thomas Fersen - Bijou: a favorite Fersen track. Today it reminds me a little of that "light" Tezuka Osamu manga I read a bit of and was plotting to buy ("light" in the context of Tezuka manga sometimes means "inspired by J.K. Huysmans"). Um, apologies for not translating, I might do it... eventually? XD;

Bijou )

Giovanni Mirabassi - Je chante pour passer le temps: KuboTite's theme for Byakuya (listen closely, I think the guy is singing along as he plays like Glenn Gould. o_O;). I had it in the "French" folder because it's actually an instrumental cover of a Léo Ferré song that is a Communist revolutionary French wartime résistance poem by Louis Aragon.

Je chante pour passer le temps )

Honestly speaking it's easier to relate that sexy bit out of Carmina Burana to Byakuya than it is to relate this, being as how post-war Louis Aragon is as à bas les aristos as you can get. XD XD OTOH post-war Louis Aragon can be so DIS IZ ROMANCE BIYATCHES ("que serais-je sans toi qu'un coeur au bois dormant") that if one was in need of a pullquote for Byakuya/Hisana etc., even though there is a 90% chance KT never thought that far.

Note that any other mangaka would rate a 99.5% chance.

F'rinstance (I really do just want to stash this one) )

Re: the ficwriter paranoia meme. As Sai said it reveals more about the meme-taker than the ficcers - in fact that was why I wrote down those remarks in the first place, trying to sort out my own response to things - but what is revealing to the ficcer are the guesses in the comments. XD Does my prose really give off that impression of precision and distance? (I shouldn't be surprised. Someone once said my stories were like icebergs sailing past in the distance - much more imposing under the surface than above, among other considerations. If they've breached any hulls I haven't heard. XD;;

Nevertheless I constantly feel as if I should be - want to be - more flail-y and fangirly and shameless, especially in fanfic, and my personal aesthetic is constraining even to me.)

...I'm trying not to spam LJ with too many extraneous posts, at least until I finish this fic. =_=

P.S. not-technically-here Bleach 212 )

There is Bleach manga this week. (I am so sad.) 'Tis only fighting. But 'tis cool fighting.

...I like shounen manga battle. But I like shounen manga battle in ten-chapter doses, so the scene plays out at something approaching RL speed in my head. One shounen manga battle serialized over the course of ten weeks... not so much. Obviously I should've gone on to another series while letting the Bleach chapters pile up so I could read them at once, but that would require self-control on my part.

Clarifications re yesterday's dorky fan meta essay:

1) The bit about privileging pairing or character, expanded upon in comments. It's a bit chicken-or-egg, really, in the sense that if you tend to like characters for "OTPish" qualities (ex. nurturing devotion, big-R Romantic obsession), they can't have those qualities unless they're 1/2 of a pairing anyway. XD Whereas if you tend to be attracted to uncaring geniuses or Machiavellian villains...

2) Didn't explain the difference between the Bing'n'Becky examples and the Nat'n'me examples, although I was nebulously aware there was one. In the former case you generally have to switch premises when going from one pairing to another (you are either reading a TezuFuji or a TezuRyo unless you are reading a fic in which Tezuka actively chooses Ryouma over Fuji or something and that is the premise of the story), in the latter you generally don't because the OTP can be said to have an open relationship, even if it's only in an intertextual sense. That is, it wouldn't matter much to X if Y went off and slept with Z so why should it matter to me. =_=
petronia: (bleh)
Which is absolutely just as well. This week has been wretched and not even fic is working, because (as Charmian pointed out) all I seem to read are stories about Byakuya and asking Byakuya to cheer one up is its own punchline. I tend not to dwell on or enumerate negative occurrences on LJ because words reify experience for me - which also explains why I sometimes take on an obviously literary tone when I feel some RL event deserves setting down, not because I'm consciously attempting to live a narrative but because what I write on LJ is the "final version" as opposed to the jumble in my head that passes for a short-term memory half of which will be swept out with the trash during my next good night of sleep**, and I need to employ what writing skills I have in the interest of exactitude - but said habit this week leaves me nothing to ramble on about but arcane fannish indulgences and minute taxonomies thereof. So... that's what it will be.

1) Two anecdotes involving Adrian Brody: anything can be a koan. )

2) No one in the Chinese fandom writes Ikkaku/Yumichika either.

3) Renji's magical hairtie and the ljArchive word count analyzer )

5) Top ten ways you know you're reading a Sabina!fic: I feel the premise of this meme is wrong, because I am not a reader of my own fic (or at least, a very special and non-representative one) and thus should not be answering this question. Tell me, folks, if you feel like doing so - how do you know you're reading a fic written by me? ^^; (Someone on an SSBB guess-the-author thread said something along the lines of, "Cafés are a very Sabina-like setting.")

** My imagination subscribes perhaps to J.M. Barrie's idea that mothers sort through their children's thoughts at night, folding and organizing as if it were so many piles of laundry. My mother being my mother, almost certainly tosses two-thirds of what she finds in the rubbish on account of it being clutter and no use to anyone, which would explain a lot.
petronia: (damned fangirls)
Your link expired btw - but I saved the text the first time around. XD Note that I skipped bits here and there when I plain didn't understand the fannish terminology.

EDIT -- credit info, since this is unlocked by popular demand and being passed around: the original fic is 十三番正副隊長的自白 by 櫻織. Translated without permission, because I am a complete lurker in Cfandom. ^^;;

Actually the title is all wrong. It shouldn't be Confessions of the Gotei 13, more like The Gotei 13 Profess Their Entire Innocence YOU PERVERTS. )

This took much longer than I thought it would. Possibly because I was dying of laughter.
petronia: (excuse me?)
I suspect in the long run I'm going to regret passing on the Feist show tonight. But oh well. >_>

Aizen knows that Urahara knows that Aizen knows that Urahara knows: following the cookie crumb trail of LOGICK. )

...And that was your giant overthinking fan essay of the day! In other news, I finally got to watch Bleach 63 over the weekend. No one told me it was DVD commentary track on the fights, mwahaha. "I'm concerned about the damage you do to the surroundings" - thank you, Ichigo, but also pot and kettle please. I'm fannish enough re the series right now that I'm pleased to see the bits of scenes they add here and there in the anime, although they tend to be not as on-point as the bits of scenes they took out (why?).
petronia: (omgwtf)
Things that never get old: LotR parody animated gifs.

I watched two more episodes of Samurai Champloo, so now I'm at... ep.11. ^^; My problem is that I feel sad to be watching it alone, I think - apart from the lack of subtitles. (But I understand it better now, thanks to all the practice subvocalising Mirage of Blaze.)

Also read the most recent chapters of Sex Pistols (23-25). Yes, between Narnia and Charmed Life. I'd forgotten that more than a single chapter of Sex Pistols at a time makes me feel as if the monkeys took my brain away to flavour banana shakes with. In Saudi Arabia, mpreg is not jokes. Am I to understand that there isn't an English summary online yet?

The parallels with the "OPEC" story in Motoni Modoru's Poison Cherry Drive are ever-so-slightly appalling, but I'm reasonably sure that one was published first. Maybe Motoni invited Kotobuki over to consume reefer pills and watch Lawrence of Arabia.

I thought this was funny - particularly the part where Mylo disses Devendra hard.

[livejournal.com profile] 20_souls pieces I particularly like (but I am only reading off others' rec lists anyway):

The Stories He Could Tell
Chad, by [livejournal.com profile] lacewood.

Counting Clouds
Kenpachi and Yachiru, by [livejournal.com profile] sophiap.

...In fact I find myself going back to reread these, so the links are here for my benefit as much as anyone else's. XD

EDIT -- Also, I am pondering a series of Bleach f00d pr0n stories. I'll pretend the Urahara+Yoruichi tempura one was the first.
petronia: (homo erectus)
1) Cathy's anon hate meme! Note that the second page is vastly more entertaining than the first. XD

2) Quick fic recs! Monster, XXXHolic, Lawrence of Arabia, Petshop of Horrors, Bleach. )

3) I haven't made fun of Byakuya for a while; must keep up hobbies. )

4) Circumstantial evidence Tiga does, in fact, lurk on ILX:
* album titled "Sexor"
* event series titled "I Love Neon"

5) (Answering people re last Bleach speculation post instead of commenting back directly) Thanks for pointing out that Quincys intake spiritual energy from the environment, I'd forgotten that distinction. Spiritrons, eh. XD Although come to think of it... )

Whew, I have been writing this entry all day. XD
petronia: (hmm)
Spicy Uighur hotpot with Ced, Tania and Henk last evening - along with lamb skewers, juicy steamed meat buns and pilaf. :D As well as meat are provided Chinese cabbage; tofu cubes; fresh ramen noodles; mung bean glass noodles; and several sauces.

Tania thinks of this cuisine as S. Russian, I think of it as N. Chinese. But mmm, SPICED MUTTON.

Yet more Bleach-related notes for myself, because I keep coming up with theories and promptly forgetting them. Spoilers. )

Could I have lived a contented life without ever seeing dollfie!Ikkaku? Almost certainly. (Then again, correct me if I'm wrong but it's easier not to attach hair to the things, no?) I do admire the effort, let alone the people who hand-modded all of Renji's tattoos. And where are the Prince of Tennis dollfies? I will laugh if you claim they don't exist.

More lists

petronia: (damned fangirls)
1) Read TRC up to chapter 88, found raws for the rest. Started watching the Outo Arc in the anime and found it sort of boringly paced, as well as even more strikingly reminiscent of Kingdom Hearts. XD Has anyone else noticed how much the characters drink in TRC/'Holic? They're constantly getting trashed, it's amazing. Isn't this supposed to be a kids' series? XD Sometimes I've felt that North American censors would get a bit twitchy at scenes of sexuality or violence in the anime or manga I follow, but this is the first time I'm thinking it about (often underage) alcohol abuse. Sakura is so the party animal.

Of course, if I were constantly travelling between worlds I'd be sure to sample the local booze everywhere I go, but this isn't about Ford Prefect me.

2) Three Invitations to a Far Reading, by Joan Houlihan
via [livejournal.com profile] supacat. Reviewer blasts several post-structuralist poets, essentially for being hypertext magnet poetry. What's refreshing is that she's discussing rules of composition (i.e. why is hypertext magnet poetry hypertext magnet poetry?), not blanket-attacking currents of lit theory. In fact she seems to accept that this type of writing calls for an alternate cognitive/reading strategy (and provides the most concise breakdown I've yet encountered of what life text looks like on consciously-induced adult-ADHD internets!skim mode), she just doesn't think it's better. More precisely, she thinks it's crap. XD

3) Caught up to Bleach anime. The bright colours they picked for the various bankai make everything look vaguely dorky - and Byakuya's Senbonzakura is pink, which completely lays waste to my ability to cut the rest for ep. 60ish spoilers. )

4) Also, [livejournal.com profile] worldserpent posts her views on Bleach pairings. It's a synthesis of what we both think, really, was up til 4AM talking about it. XD Cut, again, because it got long. This part is RenRuki. )

This part is IchiRuki. There iz CHARTS. )

Eh, I should just give up and write Byakuya/Renji and... and Aizen/Ulquiorra or something. :D;; Except that would hardly reduce the effort of analysis. (The only thing that would cut down on said effort is Ikkaku/Yumichika, because I reckon the 11th Division can't even spell analysis with the right number of y's.)

P.S. In 200 years Yachiru will be grown up and then she and Kenpachi would have to get married, like.
petronia: (ow)
Andrew: The other day Shawn, me and this other buddy of ours sat down and watched a lot of Bleach.
Sabina: Bleach? Oh hey, cool, I love Bl--
Andrew: WHAT'S WITH ALL THE GAY SHIT?
Sabina: ...What?
The analysis continues )
petronia: (squid)
I am bored and there is no one online!

1) Tania, sorry about last night. It was too late by the time I'd finished shopping. =_= I'm working Monday but not tomorrow (Saturday), although we're having a cousin over for dinner so I'll probably give into the temptation of eating at home - there will be good food and mulled wine and sparkling wine bought by me. ^^;

2) I am so bored I made a text translation of the new Viewfinder chapter. Ah, in retrospect I like [livejournal.com profile] insaneneko's "scorn and pity" line better, it has a ring to it. Nice that somebody can apparently read emotions into Asami's gaze, coulda fooled me. :P

3) I've been writing ficlets onna card the way they advise you to write exam papers: read through the questions and start at the beginning, but skip the ones that give you trouble. Thus they are being turned out approximately in the order I received the comments, with some exceptions. Now after [livejournal.com profile] serendip's TRC!Eriol fic I have four Bleach pieces to write in a row, which is why I've consciously allowed myself to dip into tiresome obsession mode. *g* Since the natural deadline is past I may as well take my time and do good work.

Last night I reread my Bleach tag-filter since April, when I caught up with serialisation. I realised I only ever make three types of Bleach-related posts:

a) commentary on latest plot developments
b) request fics
c) mockery of Byakuya

This can only mean one thing. :P
petronia: (individualist)
Is everyone up late again? XD XD

1) Watching Bleach. Still in the 40s. If you had asked I would not have said that I'd forgotten how annoying Byakuya was, precisely, and yet I find myself reminded anew. (It's not the bad kind of annoying; that's Mayuri. Still I know exactly how long it's gonna be until someone does me the favour of even slightly dislodging the stick up Byakuya, and... it's long.)

2) Rewriting 20/20. =_= Second half posted tonight or tomorrow.

3) Administering SSBB. I haven't calculated dates beyond no.4, but at some point I'd like to do a f/f issue. Charmian and I were discussing the controversy at one time and I said one's best recourse in such instances is to be pro-active; the example I gave was that I could personally take a drabble request for f/f pairings but I think this is cleverer and more fun for all. XD 5.5, perhaps, a summer bonus issue (ah, summer...).

I'd also like to compile that SSBB mix I mentioned. It would be My Present To The Team. I picture it with that Ministry of Sound sort of glossy cartoon art, but they only ever have girls.

4) Night before last I finally watched Tokyo Godfathers - no better time of year. XD Entirely sentimental, more than I expected, but it's supposed to be a Christmas fairytale so why not? You can see Satoshi Kon's favoured character design style swinging from Millennium Actress's rigorous realism back to 'deforme', progressing again in Paranoia Agent.

5) Translating that Yamane Ayano freetalk thing.

6) Crap, I was supposed to make a GetBackers post, wasn't I?
petronia: (aesthetics)
EDIT -- I am just going to post these two together, since they're fairly short and then I won't have to remember to do it. XD

For [livejournal.com profile] silvermuse89. She asked for wayoldergen!Academy fic and possibly Ukitake/Unohana, I think it was? XD

with the result that Shunsui took over the room and worked it, 231 words )

For [livejournal.com profile] pere_chan. This and the one I wrote for Meg make a fine matched pair, except Kurogane likes short sentences and Fye likes enumerative run-ons. XD

Fye and sweets, 355 words )

On principle--

Bleach 206-207 spoiler cut )

--No joke, it's kind of sad. And then 207 happened and it was like "KT is out of pages, but when the anime gets to this point it will insert 10 more minutes of necessary setup."

Speaking of out of pages... but the GetBackers post must wait as it is chock-a-block with Special.
petronia: (bibliophile)
For [livejournal.com profile] fabulous_papaya. Written after a Friday that ended with abuse of raw fish and alcohol. I quite like it, it's like a cheerful little ditty with lyrics that are impossible to grasp.

Urahara and Yoruichi, food, 438 words )

petronia: (fine time)
This "everything written on the same day must be on the same theme" thing is getting to be odd. Today's keyword: fish!

...Ow, my eyes.

Bleach 203-205 )

GitS:SAC 2nd Gig 21-24 )

I'm prolly going to give up watching ParaKiss, I can't muster the enthusiasm. >_> Blood+ is moving into the requisite high school infiltration phase... Oh and watched the date-o episode of Initial D (the art seems to be rather better?). For some reason the idea of Keisuke borrowing Ryousuke's car makes me roffle - I suppose because they're so attached to and jealous of their vehicles that it comes off on the order of Keisuke borrowing Ryousuke's pants.

TRC volume 8 still not out in French, no choice but to wait. In the meantime I have the anime to watch, and Bleach of course.
