Happy Chinese New Year!
Jan. 28th, 2006 11:26 pmText behind cuts contain various spoilers. XD
1) Nana 12 is out, but for some strange reason the print quality is so gawd-awful (LQ scan printout levels of blurry) I'm half of a mind to wait until they reprint before I buy. =_= I did read it in the store, though. Um.
...
WHAT
No seriously are we supposed to assume the beginning is what happens? XD;; At first I thought it was a wacky Hachi dream sequence. The result being the story itself progressed almost boringly, without undue drama (or due drama, since this is shoujo manga), but the foreshadowing kicked up five notches from 'wistful' to 'any second now someone could die in a plane crash dun dun dun'. Naught to do but wait again for volume 13.
2) A few days ago I asked Chrissie if she knew why both Cfandom and Jfandom kept writing gagfic about Byakuya's taste for impalatably spicy food (think Fuji, only of course Byakuya doesn't go out of his way to torture people), and she said... it was in his character profile. So I dug up the English scanlation, and sure enough it was, just that they left out the "personal preference" bits in the French manga. >_> This is not the only gripe I have with the translation: I reread volumes 6-7 looking for Ichigo's (Kaien's?) infamous eyelashes, and I nearly screamed when I realised Rukia was made to address Byakuya by name and with tu. It's worse than calling Tezuka-buchou "Kunimitsu"!
For the record - my record - Byakuya likes spicy food, solitary night walks, and Chinese bellflowers (much less elegantly called "balloon flowers" in English). Renji likes teriyaki, but not spicy food. One gets the feeling that KT has it in for him.
OTOH the French manga notes (where my scanlation does not - it's like comparing ancient Greek fragments =_=) the sixth division motto: "Nobility, purity, rationality." Insert own punchline.
...The art is v. different in volumes 6-7. Orihime's head is so big. XD So is Renji's, while Byakuya is drawn like a china doll (although if he stands by Ichigo one sees he's taller), and Chad's nose is sort of funny. No one is as sexy or as buff as they are later on in the SS arc. I like the feel of it, though: cool/cute, angular, modern, a bit indefinably European. It was the art that made me decide to read this series to begin with, a long time back.
3) While trawling Chinese Bleach fandom I came across a scanlation of January Colour Bleach. I would like to take a moment to point out that Hitsugaya's photobook is a) titled The Lion in Winter and b) in its second print run. NOW HE IS JUST MOCKING US.
4) Dunno about the other subbers but Dattebayo's translation is a bit farked - someone wrote down 変成 for 編制 I reckon. So what I heard of Yamamoto droning on at the beginning was that SS has put together a special search and investigation unit, and then Shunsui says, "'Search' sounds pretty but the real purpose is 'assassination'. That one has a tough job in front of him." And who is inexplicably missing from the captains' meeting? Byakuya. ^^;;;

Date: 2006-01-29 02:59 pm (UTC)(checks vol 8) Hm: she doesn't say anything to him there. And I only have up to vol 13 so far, which is the point where Byakuya is approaching the tower from outside, so she hasn't addressed him yet.

Date: 2006-03-01 02:19 am (UTC)Flicking further through, Byakuya, Yoruichi, and Ukitake all use "tu" to each other, but, well, aristocrats.
Though I have just fallen in love with Ukitake all over again. Byakuya storms off: Ukitake scratches his head and mutters, "Oh la la . . . toujours aussi velleitaire, celui-la."

Date: 2006-01-30 02:02 am (UTC)Actually, there are raw scans of volume 13 and, for the Chinese-enabled (which I am unfortunately not, but I believe you are?), Chinese scans of volume 14 to the most recent magazine chapter here: http://nana-nana.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=324
...the number of sentences I have typed and subsequently deleted just now leads me to believe I am congenitally incapable of discussing a series without including either spoilers or annoying little hints that are just as obnoxious. x_x

Date: 2006-02-03 05:42 am (UTC)I used to buy Nana in Japanese but gave up because it was too hard to read. Erk, a hard decision to make. XD
