petronia: (omg you killed renji you bastard)
Yeah, the whole "ask me for an essay" bit was sort of irresponsible considering I probably won't have time to write essays. XD; Have expanded on some of the shorter ones in comments, though - and there's the following.

Snippety McCut )

Earlier than I'd expected - was given an estimated ship date near the end of September. It's red and black and very slight for its class, but I didn't name it Ed. XD Pictures and review that is actually informative, not going to bother myself ahaha.

Vista seems wretchedly slow, more so than on my sister's XPS, but I haven't finished setting up. Will probably have to disable a bunch of crap.

FMA progress: finished volume 14 last night, now it will have to wait until I can order the missing volume 15 (semester-start liquidity crunch). The idea of following the story at a rate of three tankoubon per year seems mildly insane - what if the X-Files had shown one new episode a month? More of the Conspiracy(tm) would fall out of the sieve that passes for my current brain than would enter it. But I've never been very good at serialization.

I horribly miss the JoJo fandom but there's not much I can do at this point other than make the occasional WTF-face over SBR and write vastly extrapolated fic. D: Should make a poll specifically for JoJo fic. Or just finish summarizing Stone Ocean, finally, since scanlations for that seem to be going nowhere. Hmm.

...Maybe I should fall back on Occam's Razor and call the GB challenge comm [livejournal.com profile] getbacksubrosa?

OH AND ALSO I'm going to Bebel Gilberto + Forro in the Dark on Saturday. This could only be awesome!
petronia: (happy place)
LAUGHING. Candidate for biggest nerd-out by members of the "respectable" scientific community since Planet Xena. But think, it could have been worse - the researchers could have insisted that their discovery be illustrated in moe-chara style. LIGASE-TAN WILL BIND YOUR SYNAPSES WITH LOVE.

Those of you who're Ph.D.-tracked, I'm looking at you.

In other hilarious news, apparently there are Viewfinder side-stories out? Love Prize 3, Naked Truth Zero )

Other updates: TRC 159-165, Holic 139-144. Contains spoilers. )

I've also read up to FMA vol.11, halfway through. Am however missing vol.15 which stands to become a problem in the near future. ^^;
petronia: (so not awake yet)
So apparently it tasks my vision to follow a PowerPoint presentation from the back of a classroom that seats fifty people? Yeah. Not slides filled with meeny text, either.

Stuff-I've-read updates:

Fullmetal Alchemist vol.9: where I'm at now (series currently serves as my commute reading). At this point the storyline's pretty much diverged from the anime, and it's funny how disorienting I find it - doesn't fit well into the usual conceptual boxes. XD It's a shounen manga that doesn't have story arcs. It's a quest narrative that goes in circles. And so on. Stuff seems to happen mainly as a result of the last thing that happened. Characters with a stake in the proceedings are introduced, their psychology is developed, then they die (not unlike Death Note). Meanwhile "colour" characters resurface unexpectedly. I also can't grasp the "moe value" at all, which is kind of weird because I know there's a huge fandom and I don't usually deviate that far from the fangirl mean. XD;

Some rambling that's too abstract to be spoilers. )

The best hope I have is that the mangaka really is painstakingly putting together a very large jigsaw puzzle and it's just at the stage where even the pieces that fit together have no greater context in which to relate to each other. XD Will know more once I finish up to vol.16, I guess.
petronia: (full metal alchemist)
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: non-Fantasia of course. I liked it a lot - it may be my favorite movie thus far - but I think I'm in the minority on this! Cut in case anyone is worried about spoilers. )

In other news, T is putting together an FMA cosplay group for Otakuthon. I >_> in advance (since my hair is now too long to do any character except Lust, and uhhh that outfit).

Now reading the manga I got off Sakki, up to volume 3. This... moves pretty fast. I forgot how much I like Scar; nowadays as well as liking characters because they fit my "type", I like some characters as characters, because they're unusual in some way.

[livejournal.com profile] fabulous_papaya - got the books and CD too, thanks!

Welp

We finished watching FMA!

...

...

Actually we half-expected playing the file of episode 51 would cause a large black gate-thing to appear from the TV but it didn't happen ahaha we're still here and with the full complement of limbs. Ko...kowakatta. orz
petronia: (gin and tonic (silver))
FFXII tardery, technical not spoilerish )

FMA (now up to episode 38): the comments seem equally divided between "you ain't seen nothin' yet" and "stop watching now". XD I was pretty flummoxed is all, and not certain of understanding - the cast is numerous and the focus of action not always clear, let alone allegiances. There's a lot of running in circles (and yet somehow Ed and Al's inquiry advances?). Too the relentless emotional hammering is sometimes effective and sometimes chain-jerk. I do like Izumi a lot though. T and I intend to keep watching to the end, after which I'll probably read the manga, but really it's for the compulsive quality of the thing.

GetBackers: read the chapter summaries on [livejournal.com profile] getbackers, which helpfully begin where the last tankoubon left off. *CRIES*!! But I guess spoilers )

Am uploading music, so stay tuned. ♥
petronia: (worried)
Just watched FMA up to episode 34. What... the... hell. =_=
petronia: (damned fangirls)
More rigmarole with DHL, but the books came. >_>

* xxxHolic reading guide, new edition
* Steel Ball Run 10
* Sweet Blue Flowers 2

The Araki versus Nekoi interview is exactly what you imagine and more. I am translating. There is also an Ayamine Rando fanart spread, just like he blogged there would be - I am amazed at his restraint in not making Yuuko over(t)ly boobtastic. XD; The Holic characters look entirely natural in GetBackers!artstyle, even though Ayamine complained it was haaaard.

Watched more FMA with Tania last night, now up to episode 23 or was it 24. The angst continues apace. ^^; Also umm kind of spoilered myself for FFXII because I came downstairs in the morning to find my sister watching a cutscene sequence and a certain character did something with his sunglasses and I couldn't make myself look away after that. XD;;;
petronia: (full metal alchemist)
Snowed gorgeously all day. Why couldn't it have started 24 hours earlier?? ^^; Then we would have had a proper white Christmas.

Anyhow. I'm not sure "new fandoms" is the right term but this is the FMA + FFXII early impressions plus amusing babble regarding other people's pairings post. XD To wrap up the year there will also be an old/existing fandoms update, a fic rec post, and an mp3 dump (I'm thinking of doing a Sabina's 2006 In Music sort of thing, in hopes that it becomes a meme XD).

Spoilers as stated in cut text.

Full Metal Alchemist, episodes 1-16. )

The other thing I do is try to see how people came up with all the pairings in fandom (the names of which I've absorbed by osmosis). Had I known nothing about the FMA fandom/series beforehand, after watching thus far I would have predicted... much wank. XD )

The scale, by the way. )

...Uh, rather than write the FFXII part now I think I'll go game some more. XD We're discussing the gameplay mechanics in this thread, though.
petronia: (damned fangirls)
Fullmetal Alchemist to ep.4. This is not at all in the same order as the manga. Also, depressing. T said the affecting little song that plays when their house burns down is for some reason in Russian and has lyrics about um how sad it is their mother died and all their efforts gone for naught.

Big mystery of series to date: why is Roy sexy? I mean, anime characters are allowed to be as sexy as their creators are able and willing to draw them but Roy is sexier than the sum of his parts. He violates the principle of equivalent exchange. His hotness is the Philosopher's Stone.

Spiral to ep.5. After every episode T and I looked at each other and were like, "Is this series good... or... not?" And were never able to decide, so kept watching.

Big mysteries of series to date: are Ayumu's brother and Ritsuka-outta-Loveless's brother actually the same person? Does this series = (Loveless - cat ears + Weiss Kreuz - bad clothes and stupidity + "logical deduction") * Sukisho's animation style, or is there more to come? Is Mikhail going to ask for his ficlet onna card request to be changed now that I've seen this?

...I can't decide which LJ to post to so I'll go with the more embarrassing one. Didn't watch Kyou Kara Maou tonight but remind me to write about how observing Conrad effing Weller in action finally gave me an understanding of that conversation with [livejournal.com profile] fable about Mary Renault, eons ago.
