Chasing little guy around the house telling him "no." No to sticking his hand in the toilet bowl. No to clambering over the muddy door mat and chewing on outdoor shoes. No to repeatedly pressing the washing machine's cycle start button (thank goodness for child-proof settings). No to shutting himself in the bathroom with the lights off (he seems unafraid of the dark). No to eating Kleenex. No to pulling mom's glasses right off her face, which he tries to negotiate: I shake my head and say "no no no," he nods his head for yes yes yes, with a big grin. Well, my dude, No doesn't magically turn into Yes because you will it so, though my No must seem entirely arbitrary to him, so why not.

He's become more assured in the handling of various objects, and can be quite tidy: takes the plastic cap off his milk bottle, chugs -- one-handed -- then puts the plastic cap back on the bottle before leaving it on the table. He's also developed a habit of throwing everything on the island in his room into the laundry basket, whether clothes or puzzle pieces or toiletries. If I take things out, he throws them right back in. I puzzled over it for quite some time, but now I suspect this is just his version of de-cluttering: he doesn't want the stuff lying about!

Baths are fun. Learning to catch running water in a pail; thinks it's quite funny to "drink" from it and pour it all over his face and front; only a matter of time before he pours a pailful on the bathroom floor. Has figured out the faucet lever, can turn light switches on/off, has figured out the concept of "on/off" buttons generally speaking... Slipped trying to stand today, though, and cut the inside of his lip falling against the edge of the tub. :(

Alan's schedule is pretty well established by now. Up at 7, daycare before 9, pickup before 5, home before 6, bath at 7, bedtime routine by 8. If he naps less than 30 minutes the evening is cranky; if more than 90 minutes, he refuses to sleep before 9 and rampages around his room with the lights out while I lie bonelessly on the sofa. A nap of 1 hour is perfect and allows him to fall asleep by 8:30 with a minimum of fuss. In any case, once he's down he's down for the count, and if he wakes up he goes back to sleep quickly by himself. On weekends he still prefers to have two naps, but compared to what it was in China, his circadian rhythm is very civilized.

Oh, I forgot: yesterday while lying on the sofa waiting for him to calm down, I sang him songs, and he came and leaned next to me to listen. After I finished my rendition of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," he clapped!! Very gratifying. XD His grandparents tend to put on Youtube videos of full-length classical concerts while they watch him, so he's had "applauding after music" modelled for him for a while.
