Apparently Logan was born UBER-POSH as I can promise you houses that nice did not exist in the Northwest Territories during the 19th century. Man, they really went the whole Due South mile. I started expecting moose, or a gaggle of Mounties.
Regional lulz aside, though, it was very enjoyable. Constructed according to classical principles, so to speak. And the directorial touch was light, rather playful. Thinking about it there were moments where the visual treatment (if never the script) skirted good-natured parody; the farmhouse couple, say, or the entire concept of Logan as the guy any man would drink with and any woman have on her airport paperback cover.
Erin says the next origin story is likely to be Magneto's, which I can't imagine having the same tone.
Recently I also watched The Duchess, which is a better and more meaningful film than it's generally given credit for. It's a deeply feminine film, though, and doesn't resolve "cleanly" by 21st-century American standards, which may have something to do with it. (Why are stories about non-rebellious women in pretty frocks assumed to be frivolous?) Rather, it follows the rules implicit in period literature, but shows the characters evolving along paths and coming to forms of accommodation that period literature wouldn't have, although period people likely did in practice. Reminds me of The Privilege of the Sword, actually.
In other news I had a dig through my doujinshi pile to find the 12K ones. This is why I stopped buying the things long ago: I never even remember owning the ones I do.
