Jan. 17th, 2002 02:17 pmI am looking at the game section of ff.net. I have found many puzzles here to occupy my drifting mind. For instance, why are there three times as many Sonic the Hedgehog fics as Mario fics? Deeper characterization? Better angst? More intellectually intriguing plotline? What? How is it that more people write Bust A Groove fic than Persona fic (also by a factor of three)? And if one writes a story about Minesweeper, under what extenuating circumstances might the appellation of fanfiction be justified?
Notes on the FFX section (hovering around 150 fics):
1) Geez, people, there is no excuse for being involuntarily traumatized by any of this. I can *tell* whether the fic is going to be bad without having to read it. If it's perverse masochistic fascination that makes you click through, though, that's another matter.
2) If seven lines of dialogue is a standalone fic, then I am mothercunting Proust. Thank you drive through.
3) So... how *do* you say 'Auron-chan' in Al Bhed?
4) Don't put 'Tidus x Auron' in your summary. You hurt me by doing this. I am a cranky wench with a background in Japanese yaoi conventions as used by actual JAPANESE, and while the '/' in slash pairings is reversible, the 'x' in yaoi pairings is not. And I am not clicking through just to see if you *have* used it correctly, because that in itself would dock you Sabina Points.
5) Oh, boy, these servers suck too.
6) I take back what I said about Aurikku adherents being eaten by the Ickle Calamari. I am rather fond of Rikku, and at least there's some lively canonical interaction there. (I'm looking at *you*, you Wataru x Ryousuke people.) Hypothetically, a skilled writer could get a romance fic going on that basis and still keep the two essentially in character (think: the last good Aoshi/Misao you read), but it would be a CHALLENGE. Realistically, Aurikku as practiced by the fen is an exercise in the Great Evil That Is 'Shipping, and the Ultimate Triumph of Cute Over Angst. Which just makes it the same as *bad* Aoshi/Misao. Bleah.
7) As an addendum to the above, and not that anyone's written it or anything, but Wakka/Rikku has much greater potential for thought-inducing exchanges. Which, following the usual het shipper logic, would leave Lulu and Auron to be stoic together. ...Well, at least the mental image is sexy. In an alt.sex stormy-eyed bodice-ripper sort of way.
8) ...Dang, now I've given myself an art bunny. >_<
Off to take care of business; anime section to follow. ...How come there are more Samurai Pizza Cats fics than Blade of the Immortal fics? That's just wrong.

Aurulu...
Date: 2002-01-17 03:37 pm (UTC)Point about Auron/Rikku == Aoshi/Misao is well put, but I think the main issue I have with Auron/Lulu (now that I've actually had a chance to examine it), is that Auron would never go for anyone who didn't basically initiate stuff with him (he has Better Things To Worry About, I think), and Lulu... of all the characters, she tops my list for 'most likely to have sexual issues' -- poke me sometime and I'll explain my theory about why she actually dresses like that. There's just not any motivation there, even if you do explain Wakka/Rikku adequately.
'Course, I want there to be room for Lulu/Rikku, because I'm into the yuri like that, except I just don't think there is. I mean... The hug! All the conversations! Chappu!
Eh. I'm glad somebody else has my thoughts about Aurikku. I don't feel quite so dirty.
Re: Aurulu...
Date: 2002-01-17 11:32 pm (UTC)I think Lulu has the same sexual issues that I have. But that's a silly tale for another day. And do talk to me about your game thoughts: I'm currently incapacitated for any other subject.
