SO THIS SUPERMAYER REMIX OF RUFUS WAINWRIGHT'S TIERGARTEN
...is a white label. With Oink deceased how this is going to trickle down to me I don't know. :((( *snips it out of Damian Lazarus's podcast*
Mayer and Spitcher are getting INDIE in their old age and need to have the glockenspiel and trombone and whatnot forcibly removed from Kpakt premises for the greater good but... this really is AMAZING orz||

Date: 2007-11-12 10:51 am (UTC)Pundits would love the Supermayer album if it were by some Pitchfork-indie outfit. (Or maybe not: doesn't save it from being cutesy at times I think. Then again when has twee ever...)

Date: 2007-11-12 11:35 am (UTC)hm, listening, I think it could have done without the bit at the beginning where it's mostly actual-song? when it's all burbles and ghost voices and propelling-bass versus the drag of wainwright's voice it's pretty awesome. they really are doing something different, aren't they? I mean some of it's formula dance-remix but some of it v def isn't.

yeah! And it doesn't even have the crossover thing that, say, the field had because it's not dance enough. poor boys.

Date: 2007-11-12 11:43 pm (UTC)What strikes me as distinctive is the organic high end - this jumble of identifiably real instruments being played (seemingly) and not sampled+sequenced. Is what gives the Pfork-indie vibe, I think, at least all the Pfork-indie I listen to these days is a jumble of people playing odd instruments with varying degrees of competence/halfassedness. XD CocoRosie's twee toybox noises vs. the "Like You" remix's twee toybox noises. The thunderstorm recording here. The polarizing glockenspiel in "Two Of Us" (I think it's polarizing precisely because it sounds like a "live" glockenspiel being played over the "proper" track). And so on.
One down, I'm still waiting on that FZ-style mnml remix of Beirut though. XD D'you hear me, universe.
If it turns out Damian Lazarus and M. Mayer sit around listening to Annie St. Vincent it would explain a lot (I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I'M SURPRISED).
