petronia: (plugging away)

Earlier than I'd expected - was given an estimated ship date near the end of September. It's red and black and very slight for its class, but I didn't name it Ed. XD Pictures and review that is actually informative, not going to bother myself ahaha.

Vista seems wretchedly slow, more so than on my sister's XPS, but I haven't finished setting up. Will probably have to disable a bunch of crap.

FMA progress: finished volume 14 last night, now it will have to wait until I can order the missing volume 15 (semester-start liquidity crunch). The idea of following the story at a rate of three tankoubon per year seems mildly insane - what if the X-Files had shown one new episode a month? More of the Conspiracy(tm) would fall out of the sieve that passes for my current brain than would enter it. But I've never been very good at serialization.

I horribly miss the JoJo fandom but there's not much I can do at this point other than make the occasional WTF-face over SBR and write vastly extrapolated fic. D: Should make a poll specifically for JoJo fic. Or just finish summarizing Stone Ocean, finally, since scanlations for that seem to be going nowhere. Hmm.

...Maybe I should fall back on Occam's Razor and call the GB challenge comm [livejournal.com profile] getbacksubrosa?

OH AND ALSO I'm going to Bebel Gilberto + Forro in the Dark on Saturday. This could only be awesome!

Has getbackthename been suggested? Not much flair, I grant.

Whatever it's called, I'm so looking forward to it.

Vista is really slow, unless you have 2Gb of RAM, which you have?

Otherwise, Ubuntu runs so smoothly, with extremely beautiful eye candy with Compiz.

What exactly is Vista good for, anyway?  All I've heard is that it disables most HDD/bluetooth devices.  I mean, I find XP perfectly tolerable; I'm not exactly looking for an upgrade the next time I get a machine (hopefully not for a while....)

(Of course, I found Win98 quite tolerable as well, so....)

Well, if you buy a new Windows machine now, it's going to come pre-installed with Vista. XD Otherwise... annoying stringent security (I've actually come across pr0n about this online, because people will slash anything) and visual eyecandy. I'm sure it does other stuff but that's all I've noticed from casual usage.

I haven't tried to connect it with a bluetooth device (i.e. my phone) but the laptop comes with native bluetooth connectivity, so theoretically at least it should work.

It's probably all the Google Desktop stuff, actually.

The author!

It seems like there ought to be something out there; 'getbackthe(five letter word)' (Oh, with dashes, [livejournal.com profile] get_back_the_id. Although...that may be really confusing) or perhaps referencing the Brain Trust, who are secret people, after all, or the fact that the series is divided into acts. Or the letter X! I thought about those things, but you see the result was not much.

...[livejournal.com profile] getbacksubrosa, you say? I think it's growing on me.

Have you tried asking for ideas in [livejournal.com profile] getbackers?

Still, I run Google Desktop on my Linux Ubuntu install and it doesn't slow things to a halt...

September appears to be the season for getting new laptops.
I've bit the bullet as well.
Thinkpad X61 (2GHz, 2Gb, 160Gb, Intel X3100 + usual bells and whistles).

Tell all

I'm very close to just going with [livejournal.com profile] getbacksubrosa. XD Mostly I just want to present the comm with a fait accompli including dates, since I'm not personally acquainted with most of the people who post there these days (i.e. they're not going to be following a discussion on my LJ) and don't want it to be too confusing.
