Melissa Gregory, Denis Petukhov and Johnny Weir - Sarabande Suite [Marshall Showcase, 2007]

But no, it's tasteful. I PROMISE. [1]

My sister discovered request forums for figure skating vids, so for the past few days we've been watching digitized versions of crappy old VHS tapes of Brian Boitano programmes I still remember despite the fact that I was, like, seven. This exercise aids in the (re)discovery that 1) flesh-coloured tights technology has advanced by leaps and bounds in my lifetime, 2) Blades of Glory is basically a roman à clef (can one say "ciné à clef"? I've always wondered), and 3) Johnny Weir is a pretty, pretty ballerina.

A SIDE-BY-SIDE DOUBLE TOE COMPARISON:

Oksana does Tchaikovsky
Johnny does Saint-Saëns (w/ bonus Bald Kurt)

The sad thing is that it's the second piece that reminds me automatically and overwhelmingly of ballet class, since we did the entire Carnival of the Animals suite (I was a kangaroo).

[1] That being said, WTF Marshall Challenge? I mean I know that people in the U.S. don't watch the same sporting events covered with the same bias but every once in a while I'm confronted by THE CRACK.

You know what would have been awesome? If the three of them had skated to The Boy is Mine (http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/The-Boy-Is-Mine-lyrics-Monica/57F55A93630212C1482568BD00311498) -- or, uh, whatever the equivalent is for two guys and one girl -- instead of some boring classical instrumental piece.

(Cue high school talent show flashback in five, four...)

Here, have a Johnny Weir icon as made by...me! He is the prettiest man to pretend to be straight in the history of the world, I think.

Johnny Weir shirtless

No, that one's fine as long as you get Melissa to play Brandy and Johnny to play Monica as any other variation would strain credulity frankly. XD

(Okay, back to editing SSBB...)

*thumbs up*

Does he pretend? I don't think he pretends. XD

I wasn't even thinking dirty thoughts until you mentioned "tasteful"! And then I couldn't stop. XD

I'd been looking up figure skating on YouTube last couple days, too. The '94 Winter Olympics is my earliest memory of figure skating; I remember being disappointed because I liked Nancy Kerrigan better. Man, the expectations were different, then, for technical difficulties. XD

You did ballet? Sweet. ♥

Some time over the most recent season, someone in the skating world questioned his sexuality and he said he was straight. Of course, nobody believes him....

I've watched as much as I can of every Olympics since 1994. I was in second grade and watched figure skating on my mom's tiny TV because nobody else in the house wanted to. Scary memories sometimes!

O you feel old do you, I remember back to Calgary '88. XD

Not to mention the scoring! Boitano falls down three times, gets 5.9 across board, commentator is like "you have to remember that 5.9 doesn't mean the judges think his technique deserves a 5.9, it means they think he did better than [other dude] who got 5.8." HILARITY.

(There is maybe possibly an RPS fandom for this? But you didn't hear it from me.)

And you have just reminded me how addicted I was a while ago to figure skating vids. ;) (It was Yagudin and Plushenko's fault. They were so, so riveting to watch. *g*)

Also, if your sister hasn't discovered it yet, here is a link to even more figure skating vids here (http://www.fsvids.net/).

The proof that the threesome is greatness is that, now that I think of it, it sort of reminds me of that Marion Zimmer Bradley threesome in her Mists of Avalon series. Except that Johnny is Guinevere and Melissa is Lancelot, or something.

(Read in discussion somewhere that since it's named after fallen angels, it's actually about Adam/Eve, and Johnny is Lucifer. You see, because Lucifer has jumps.)

(Yes, I'm in Quebec City. :D)

i had forgotten how much i enjoy watching figure skating. ♥ the roommate and i are too cheap to shell out for cable, so there are no chances to stumble across a figure skating show on tv, ever; this made me very happy. ♥ ♥ ♥
