William Gibson posts about the creative process.

I needed that at the top of my flist. This time last year I had nearly ten ficlets onna card in the post and as of tonight I've only finished one, with five others in various stages of completion. The prompts aren't quantifiably more difficult so it must be me. ^^; The mind just resists. I've written 400 words or so tonight, which is silly considering I've been at it for six hours.

Mind insists none of it is any good either, but as Gibson posts that's largely meaningless.

We who are about to die by academic deadlines salute you.

Here is a picture which will probably not be as much of a shining anvil of moe (http://canis.dragons-wing.net/imgs/Pure_087.jpg) to you as it is to me, but in the name of moral (?) support.

Hee hee hee--

Actually I'm done with yours. o_O Didn't expect it, but it miraculously grew a point, so.

! \^o^/ I still treasure your one from last year like the precious shiny thing it is. Lines from it float through my head from time to time. Usually in bed.

Well that's very interesting. I mean, okay, Gibson may think what he's written is absolute crap, but he does it for a living.

I know for sure I feel the same about everything I've ever written, and I'm guessing we're not alone in these...feelings? But we're writing fanfiction, and have the option of not posting. So we can't truly believe that it's crap. I think it's more complex than that, maybe more a fear that the work is so much a part of myself, my internal world, that it's going to fail to connect with any reader.

Something like that? I don't know. Hahahaha exam panic.

The belief that one is delusional. XD Actually, for my part it's that my opinion of what I write changes all the time - sometimes I think it's great, sometimes I think it's boring and awful. But go back to it six months later and there's no way of telling what was written in an inspired state and what was slogged out. It makes no difference to the end result.

OTOH one can't claim that I'm definitively incapable of critically judging my WIP as I write, else I wouldn't be able to edit it successfully, so it's as much a conundrum. ^^;

haven't read it yet, but i thought william gibson was the one who went on hiatus for a year or so because he was so reliant on blogging that it killed everything creative about him?

or am i thinking of somebody else? was it bruce sterling?

I know he stopped blogging for a bit because it was an outlet for stuff that otherwise woulda gone into novels--he has a metaphor about magpies, I think?--but he seems to have found a way to reconcile them.

You might not have written as many ficlets onna card but you've been writting constantly for the last few months, between blind_go and ssbb and the jojo fics. It could just be burnout.

I hope not, I have too much to do! XD;;; But I suppose the logical answer here is, most of the ficlets last year were written during the second half of November, and this November I blew off everything to write the JoJo epic. The total wordcount on the ficlets is about 2000 to date which to be honest isn't too disreputable. It feels like pulling teeth though.
