Not-quite reviews
Jan. 6th, 2006 07:33 pmLast few imps I bought off
calintz were delivered by Canada Snail, finally. :0
The Ghost
A thin, sinuous, creeping chill, the scent of glee-filled undeath: white iris, osmanthus, Calla lily, tomb-crawling ivy and a coffin spray of gladiolus, lisianthus and delphinium.
Does not come across remotely as gothic as the description makes it sound. I was worried that it would beat my sinuses into submission with Calla lily (a live bouquet of which does remind me of funeral parlors and gives me a headache), but nothing of the sort. If this were a fictional character it would be Jane Bennet. It's antique rose-coloured, a bit English gardens, and there's a fresh fruity note that wanders in and out. I can only assume it's the osmanthus, which has a fresh fruit-candy sweetness, although it doesn't smell like osmanthus to me. Tried it last night, must test it again for day use; my impression is that it burns off v. v. quickly.
La Belle Dame Sans Merci
The name translates to "the beautiful woman without mercy", and is the title of an old French court poem that was later revamped by John Keats. A bewitching, seductive scent, rife with mystery and foreboding.
History of the Pre-Raphaelite Movement in a sample bottle. Starts rosa rubicundior drowning her mad heart in a green forest pool, ends Victorian honeysuckle soap. I like the first hour quite a lot, but there is white musk or something in this and now it will be honeysuckle soap until the next time I shower. XD;; I had the same experience with Oberon.
Maybe I should stop buying perfumes with white musk in them (or putting them on in the morning - as evening scent they would go over better). The creamy sweet feminine expensive-soapness of it makes me feel grumpy, as if I'd been forced to wear satin ruffles to work.
Black Opal
A play of geological darkness and jagged brilliance. Soft and luminescent with flashes of black fire.
All I did was run my fingertips along the rim and sniff, but it's v. vanilla - not sugar-cookie vanilla, musky tropical vanilla. It reminds me of Tendre Poison, which a friend of mine used to wear in CEGEP (thus kickstarting my association of vanilla perfume with pale, feminine, curvy Slavic girls). I'll have to test it properly, but chances are good that Tania will like it a lot more than I ever will. XD
