Beauharnois
Nov. 9th, 2012 10:26 pmHigh school geography class being a long time ago, I'd frankly forgotten the existence of the place. Very cool! No actual art, but the architecture has that 1930s, monumental, Ayn Rand Battles Diego Rivera brass-letter industrial aesthetic. Massive turbines with Art Deco lights up top. Tour group of 4: my colleague, me, an old man in a NASA cap and poppy pin, and -- probably -- his son. They do a lot of sailing, he said later, and had always wondered what the kilometre-long building at the mouth of the river was. It's not a reservoir dam, so.
Photos not allowed inside. I kept joking how tourists wouldn't get within miles of Three Gorges, but I've just googled and that turns out not be true at all. You can visit and there's a museum.
Maybe someone will write one of those "Avengers go to Vegas" fics in which Steve just skips the putative depravity and goes to visit the Hoover Dam because he always wanted to before. Someone who knows what they're talking about, that is. XD; I'll have to ask my parents but I have no memory of us doing that side trip (only of the carpet in one of the casinos, and of being very turned off by the idea of slot machines, when it was explained to me -- I was 6). I was impressed by the monumental stuff, eg. I remember Mount Rushmore and Old Faithful and the Lincoln Memorial pretty clearly, so if I'd been there I think I'd know.
......Come to think of it I'd be pretty equipped to write one of those "Steve does a road trip across the US" fics, as long as... it was an AU that took place TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO good grief.
