So.

My dad is finally out of the basement.

...

Guess whose computer is now refusing to boot?

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH

Anyway, am now running chkdsk /r. It's at 60%. If recovery doesn't work we resort to the merciless yet efficient services of Mr. Reinstall Windows. For a while I thought I was going to lose my music collection (in which case... I'm not even going to talk about it) until ahaha I remembered it was on a separate drive. However if I wipe C:\ I lose a crapload of graphics and music videos and an indeterminate number of BL scanlations. Worthwhile WIPs should be mirrored at work, but there go any chances of recreating my old Pitas layouts for Livejournal.

Well, at least I won't lose my copy of Advent Children. x_X; With great irony I actually buckled down virtuously on Sunday afternoon to burn some backups (several CDs worth of music for Cedric as well as FFVII:AC, but uhh I think of Cedric's music collection in part as a distributed backup copy of mine. And vice-versa certainly).

I happen to have a copy of FFVII lying around. Do you need it.

I'm content with Ubuntu. You should give it a try. 32-bit systems don't run the chance of not having your favourite proprietary software (Flash, Real). So... I always end up resorting to Windows one way or another.

Your music rocks; One could so use it as a porn movie soundtrack, says he innocently.

You know, I suspect this happened because my sister unilaterally installed your copy of Riven on this computer. :0 It was working... for about a day.

NO. I installed it before, I just didn't tell you. I was working for 3 days at least.

Am not an expert on HD recovery -- I know basically nothing about it, in fact! -- but have had a drive which utterly refused to boot but was perfectly readable as secondary, so don't forget to investigate thoroughly. (In fact, I GOT that drive because it stopped booting on someone else's machine, but worked handily on mine, and it survived for well over a year after that as my primary HD.)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's Windows that's ded and not the hard drive itself. Now where to test it on. x_x

;_; Poor Sabina., Mr. Evil has invaded your computer as well. I hope it will end up working all right? The only thing I could possibly think of helping you with woudl be bl scanlations, but other than that. At least you didn't lose your music!

^^; Good luck. I've actually just reinstalled OS X due to problems with my iBook. Fun times.

Oook, sympathies. BTW, even if the drive is no longer bootable, sometimes you can use another one to boot, and recover the data. Sometimes these things just die for no reason. -_-

Oh right. One recovery method I learned in the past was to boot from a Linux-on-a-disk (which runs from the CD, on the memory only). Upon booting, you will have access to all devices plugged in your mobo (including all HDs). So unless the data's really kaputt (I don't know, file system screwed up) or that you face a mechanical problem, you will always be able to *see* your files. One such livedisk (and by far the most well-known) is Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.net/).

But the question is, will I be able to burn backup CDs? D: Since we're on dialup at home I can't FTP everything to server (well, I could, but it would be horribly painful). And my CD drive is wonky to begin with, I was planning to replace it in short order.

I've never tried to burn things out, but I assume if one can see the optical drive, and see the hard disk, the answer would be yes? Besides, we talk about extreme measures, if else fails; in that case, I'd suggest, take out the HD you want to recover, plug it in a different computer with high-speed internet access or a DVD burner (you may want to remove all existing drives, if you're paranoid like me) and boot from that computer. Maybe just try to burn yourself a Knoppix at work, and see whether there's data to be seen?

I do remember. In fact I told mom this morning she should've told you about it (I don't think she understood the severity of the problem) because I have no idea if you have data on it that you need ASAP (like a half-written essay, say). I mean obviously I'm going to try to save everything I can, but it might take a few days of running around.

Ooof. Okay. Er. Well, I have the huge Admin birdhouse project on it, the revised version of which I have to finish for Monday. And the record of meetings for the same project.

Thank GOD I printed out the term paper during the weekend.

How much time / running around do you think it will take? O_o
