To eDonkey, Cedric!
Oct. 11th, 2005 04:55 amThis just in from the Shioul ML: Utada Hikaru theme songs for new movie based on Mishima's novel.
I first read Spring Snow when I was nine, during our move from upstate New York to Montreal. It was a Chinese translation my parents had borrowed from someone/somewhere - don't know where - later returned, and when I ask my mother she says she remembers no such thing. >_> As I recollect we were stuck in a motel for days with nothing to eat but Nutella on bread, and nothing to read but Mishima. From the experience I conceived a hearty dislike for Nutella, so it definitely happened (my mother claims not to remember that part either); it's a wonder I don't have irrational h8 for Mishima as well. I didn't get it, thought the main characters hadn't a scrap of sense in them. Not sure I've changed my mind, really.

Date: 2005-10-11 02:58 pm (UTC)1) Read the books.
2) Get the mp3 somehow.
But I'm only halfway thru Jonathan Strange... *winces at pile of unread books on shelf*

And hilariously enough, my senior thesis involves writing about Mishima, though I've only read Confession of a Mask and the short stories collection so far.. *cough*

Date: 2005-10-12 12:09 am (UTC)Based on that family's history, my guess is that he was mummified and his wife keeps him in the living room. :D

Hmm, it'd be cooler if they cast him in resin and gave him an inner skeleton, and they pose him in--
*is shot*

Date: 2005-10-13 02:24 am (UTC)You made it WORSE. D: Why is Japan so determined to bring a femenine element to Mishima's works? Is it because they fear that such a high concentration of testosterone will destroy them??
There's always the glass cage. People could go and gawk.

Date: 2005-10-13 02:30 am (UTC)Yeah, I really don't know what they were thinking. I mean, I'm not quite expecting Fist of the North Star or anything (*brain explodes*), but uh... yeah. I... I... the physicality... ughw... ee...
I'll just go right on imagining the Lenin-Mishima ZOMBIE MUMMY face off now.

Well, we already know that visually the movie is going to be flawless, I think we can trust them with the rabu-rabu part, the question is now how the spiritual/philosophical content will carry - if at all.
And, please dear gods, let them make the "Runaway Horses" into a movie next, that is by far the best part of the whole tetralogy and one of the best books I've read in my life.
You should read it, y'know. It is *very* different in style to the "Spring Snow", as is the point. It's the warrior's purity to the courtly decadence of the first book, and its characters.

Date: 2005-10-13 06:09 am (UTC)And it's not even a manga glossy - nay, a perfectly ordinary housewife's rag. Oh, were Mishima to know what pages would his opus magnum be sharing with the preview of the fourth Harry Potter movie - he'd have reached for the trusty old katana much earlier. :)
