Happy music
Sep. 11th, 2005 10:52 pmFeel compelled to make a few notes regarding the stories I wrote for
bb_shousetsu. You know how it is. ^^;
"Quickie": when asked to write quote realistic setting unquote I invariably hork out a mix of undigested chunks of my own life, those of my friends, et cetera. It's pretty awful. I live in terror of turning into D. H. Lawrence who would insult a whole new set of social acquaintances with every book because he gave physical quirks to his characters that were recognizable to the point of caricature, then proceeded to attribute horrible psychological motivations to them that had no basis in reality. Also - seriously, how do people who write thinly-veiled autobiography do it? I'm not talking about excess or lack of self-absorption. I like my life and think it's an interesting one, but writing about it is like one of those annoying dreams about waking in the morning, getting up and going to class - upon which one wakes up for real and has to get up and go to class. =_=
So everyone in this story is named after a coworker or friend of friend, Annick's apartment is Justin's place with a transplanted bead curtain (so easily recognizable Tania caught on immediately and proceeded to attribute identities to my characters in roman à clef fashion - it was terrifying), and the actual core anecdote was something that I was told by my best friend at the time who was told by her friend had happened to a boy I semi-fancied when I was eighteen. Although the boss's sprog was a girl, I think. Gabriel's homeless stint is also inspired by reality - I can think of three people I know who haven't a steady place to stay right now. I'd originally planned to give the fact a certain philosophical (?) significance but was too brain dead by the end not to keep it light. ^^;
"Revels": bashed out literally in 72 hours, though I'd been pondering Hwei's picture for a month and the universe itself for... seven years or thereabouts? Needed to swing to the other extreme of my prose style and pull out all the stops as a corrective, passages gacked off Italo Calvino etc. I find it hilarious that I ended up writing PWP pr0n set in Lucan's time - it's centuries previous to my "home" period and vaguely equivalent in my mind to, er, Warring States or Ancient Rome RPS. And with famous historical personages yet. I suppose if debauchery or assorted craziness is proposed I associate it immediately with that period of Genufan history, so.
(Yes, I'm very good at amusing myself.)
To be honest I really like this one. XD Enough that I think I might pull it at some point in the future and rework it into something I can show family, non-fandom people etc., though saints alone know how.
Been in a really good mood all weekend [1] due to 1) SSBB being done for the time being and 2) people seeming to like it. So here is some happy music.
Stars - Elevator Love Letter: Thanks to
helvetius. I'm two years late on this one by hipster standards, I think. XD However if you are even later than me, please to download this song, put it on and star (haha) in your own shoujo romance manga for four minutes. I listened to it biking and could swear I flew. The rest of Heart is not as utterly lovely but fine enough that one almost hates it; it's like one of those movies starring Ethan Hawke or Scarlett Johansson as a beautiful, intelligent, sensitive person with an interesting life and angst about - what?
Gwen Stefani - Cool (Richard X Remix): I like this considerably better than the original. It's exactly the remix I'd've made of this song if, er, I were a genius pop producer: remove the middy synth string parts weighing the thing down, thuddy beat way down low to carry the groove and all manner of sparkly bits way up top - snares! birdsong! tinkly Christmas xylophone! It's the audio equivalent of drinking Goldschlager.
Pet Shop Boys - A Red Letter Day (Motiv8 12" Mix) Speaking of remixes I like better than the original, Cis tipped me off to this one. :D It's almost a happy hardcore treatment, though the overall effect is half due to the song itself being so damned happy.
I also have a leak of the new t.A.T.u., Dangerous and Moving, which exceeds all reasonable expectations for a pop album, i.e. you can play it from beginning to end and not have to skip a single track. I'm compiling a list of reasons why this album is awesome, for example:
5) I am currently downloading the "All About Us" video in which (I am assured by reliable sources) Yulia kills YET MORE PEOPLE.
7) Sting guests but you can't even tell.
11) "Obizienka Nol": rest of the world is like, "Ooh, ominous and dramatic!" Meanwhile Russians are like, "......Monkeys?"
I have decided t.A.T.u. are actually v. punk.
[1] At least until I started wrestling with train timetables. But now I have my Eurostar ticket - will be in London afternoon of the 23rd thru morning of the 26th - the rest I'm leaving up in the air until I arrive in Antwerp. Might even do something mad like go on a biking day tour. Pounding anticipation!
