Liner Notes
Disco Otaku Mix, like it says. All but two of these tracks date from the 1980s, some are hits, some are obscure, and some are filthy if you pay attention to what the lyrics are actually saying. There is quite a lot of italo disco, which (as we know) I consider to be an important genre because if there were no italo disco there would probably be no Pet Shop Boys and certainly no Initial D Eurobeat OSTs, and the world would be a colder and drearier place. Yes, this is really what I think Oshitari listens to, or will when he's old enough to drive.
For a change I figured I'd write liner notes on each of the tracks in a mix (as some of these are among my favorite songs ever, fluo-orange cheese and all).
01) Gacked off the ILM request thread; someone was asking for items off a list of most influential/important songs of the past fifty years or something like that - Paul Morley's? I am too ignorant to know how "Pull Up To The Bumper" is influential but Grace Jones sure is filthy-great.
02) Because Kylie is too classy for this mix. ...No, I just really like this song. XD An earlier version of the tracklist had 3-4 songs about picking up in nightclubs, including Basement Jaxx's "Oh My Gosh" and a remix of Annie's "Heartbeat".
03) When I was four a little girl from Hong Kong transferred to my kindergarten, and we all thought she was a STAR because she knew how to DANCE THE DISCO. No, I'm serious, this is a true story. That's what Red China was like in 1985. Of course, it took me about half an hour in front of the dressing mirror to realise dancing the disco wasn't rocket science, and the rest - as they say - was history.
I remember this as being my favorite song back then, which makes no sense because it would've had to be a Chinese cover version (by no means impossible - time to plunge into Jacky Cheung's back catalog, aha...).
04) Gacked off the ILM request thread one Saturday at the office as I was working overtime and chatting with Chrissie on MSN. I made a mix for myself where I followed Lindsay Lohan with this - it's not the same song but it's the same whiny dancefloor wankfest concept. XD I love that the narrator gets so indignant about people spreading rumours about him, but he doesn't tell you what they are, just the rumours going around about other people.
05) Don't remember which music blog I got this from, but it's... it's... I think the Hyoutei Tennis Club should cover this. XD XD XD German synthpop from 1983, according to Discogs.
06) From a Best of Italo Disco compilation I own. Best song on it IMO.
07) From Alternative CD1. Supposedly Neil Tennant doesn't like this song. WHY?!? I BET CHRIS LOWE LIKES IT!! ...When you ask PSB fans which of their albums is the best, they always say something like "Behaviour. ...Well, except for Alternative that is." Or "Very. ...Well, except for Alternative that is." I used to think they were all barmy, but now I have seen the light.
08) More italo disco. This track is so well-known it's listed in Wikipedia. XD
09) Kindly provided by
mitethe. I had the Paul Oakenfold remix at first but this is in a much more fitting style.
10) Also listed in Wikipedia, with the note "not to be confused with Siouxsie Sioux's band" - which is just as well, because if you google for the lyrics Siouxsie Sioux is who you'll find. So I'm still not entirely sure what this song is about. My brain insists it's about Mirage of Blaze but that can't be right. ;_;
11) Gacked off Robot Blair - cheap and awesome Miami booty bass. I'm convinced I can actually reproduce most of this with my old Casio keyboard's presets. The hands-in-the-air moment is when the Spanish verse comes in.
12) Shimada Nami was an idoru who was huge in the late 80s. I'm not sure why there is a Larry Levan remix of "Sun Shower" as it was an album filler track far's I can tell - not a single, not even a b-side. One site I visited claimed it was a white-label vinyl bootleg. The story goes Legowelt (the Dutch DJ and electronica artist) gacked this randomly off teh intarwebs and liked it so much he tracked down the master tape and had it re-issued on his label along with his own remix (which I haven't heard, but if someone wants to brave slsk for me go right ahead XD). The name for the mix actually comes from this track: "European otaku" was how the Cisco Records website referred to the presumed target audience of Legowelt's endeavour, which seems about right to me. If you ever meet this guy at a party, suggest he remix the original Onyanko Club spinoff version of "Valentine Kiss" next.
13) I think (but am not sure) that this is actually called the "Scissor Sisters Sticky Tits Mix". The original track is from 2002, and if it isn't italo disco it's still electrodance by an Italian DJ (Andrea Dorca), so close enough for a Friday. XD
14) I made Cedric track this down over eDonkey after hearing it as part of a Radio Electroclash podcast. As the mix began with a song about the limousine as signifier for sexual penetration it's only fitting that it ends with a song about the limousine as signifier for the mythmaking machine of Hollywood, or something. One of my favorite disco tracks.
