The rest of the summary of Gunjou
Jul. 17th, 2005 06:31 pmTwo days later, I finally explain what happened. Yes, well, you know how it is, I'm four movies behind on my Fantasia reviews too. ^^;
***
In short: the assassins' names are Matsuda Takahide (兄) and Matsuda Katsuhide (弟), they're twins and Ujimasa's childhood companions, and Takahide was one of his close retainers for a time, the Matsuda clan being vassals in long and honorable standing with the Hojo. Really it's impossible to say that any of what happened was Ujimasa's fault, because Takahide was a bad apple any way you cut it. If he lived in the present day he'd be one of those nightmares who talk big, do nothing, get into ego conflicts with co-workers, think the management is "jealous of his talent" when disciplined, and sue the company on spurious discrimination charges when finally fired. Ujimasa did fire him in a sense, by cutting him from his personal corps, which caused Takahide to develop a personal grudge against Ujimasa (if he didn't already). He took his brother and a group of followers and left the Hojo, entering service under Satomi Yoshitaka. At the siege of Odawara he persuaded his uncle Norihide to provide information to Hideyoshi's forces in exchange for safety, but the plot failed and Hideyoshi ordered Norihide to commit seppuku afterward anyway, in disgust at his treachery. Fearing repercussion, the Satomi had Takahide assassinated.
And yes, these are the people who raped Saburou, and that's why. They expected Ujimasa to learn of the slur to the family once they were well away, but of course Saburou never talked.
(These are not real people, for the record. Kuwabara points this out in her afterword, which is just as well because I might've swallowed her fake infodump otherwise. XD; Though the bit about Matsuda Norihide was true I think. Then again they'd have to be made-up, apart from the obvious sensei must've been aware at this point that her fangirls are well capable of trekking over mountain and valley to spit on someone's grave.)
In any case. Tsunashige switched yorimashi with Ujimasa (when they say 'kagemusha' in Yami Sengoku they mean it) and lured Katsuhide out by driving to Hakone's volcanic fault - I've never been to Japan, so when they talk about these hellish sulfur geyser areas I always picture Yellowstone National Park. ^^; Ujiteru then "dealt with" Katsuhide, ultimately burying him under a mud landslide and letting one of the Hojo reijuu tigers rip his soul apart. It wasn't until they started fighting, however, that he realised Katsuhide wasn't working alone.
In the meantime Takahide went after Ujimasa himself, as Ujimasa knew he would. They fought, wounding each other fairly badly - and then Takahide told him about Saburou's rape, which he'd evidently been saving up for centuries to taunt Ujimasa with. Most of it was unrepeatable. It must be said he got exactly the reaction out of Ujimasa he wanted: utter white-faced shock followed by utter rage. As in, somewhere around "I was thinking about humiliating you when I did it" Ujimasa went for his throat with his bare hands screaming "I'm going to fucking kill you," because there are situations where psychokinesis just doesn't satisfy. Takahide was waiting for him to get close enough, and was about to strike when Kotarou stepped out from behind a tree and shot him in the back of the skull - because the head of the Hojo clan never "receives guests" alone, and there's an end to that. Takahide's soul gets fed to the tiger, and Ujiteru arrives in time for Ujimasa to faint on him from blood loss.
...Another movie. Shinjirarenai. XD;;
