What fanficcers call "muses" are - of course - mental constructs (let's set aside the case of people who have difficulty admitting that they're mental constructs ^^;), but they're mental constructs in the sense that a character played by a method actor is a mental construct to him/her. In fact I rather suspect "talking to one's muses" is an introverted version of method acting, as befits a creative format and culture populated by and geared toward introverted personalities. It accounts for that peculiar sense of non-responsibility - it's-not-me-it's-the-character - that we're all familiar with (which I think we are. Even if you're like me and refuse to use the word "muse" to refer to anything except a minor Greek deity XD). Not to mention the low-key impulse to adopt the character's clothing style, speech patterns, diet choices, et al.

What the hell was this about again...? Oh, yeah, an example of the music Oshitari's been inflicting on me the past couple of days:

Laura Pausini - In assenza di te (In Your Absence)

Admittedly this kind of thing is inherently better in Italian than in English, but...

I've never used muses before, mostly because, er, I never got the point of them ._.

Well, there is no point to them. ^^; Unless you mean humourous muse fic, but that's from the reader's POV. From the writer's POV they're essentially a pratical joke that the brain plays on itself.

It's always felt weird saying, "MY MUSES ARE NOT COOPERATING WITH ME" when I really mean, "MY WRITING IS TURNING OUT SHIT, THANKS." >>;;

Oh, I never get "my muses are not cooperating". If I can't bloody write it's my own damned fault. XD;; The only times when I have a vaguely "muse-like" experience is when they coooperate too much. As in, THANK YOU FOR THE USELESS EXTRANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR CHILDHOOD, DO YOU HAVE A STORY? NO? THEN SHUT UP AND MOVE TO THE BACK, KTHXBYE.

I get that problem.

In fact, I'm beginning to wish they'd just clear out because I need that space to remember protein names - since these damn scientists like long boring monotonous names like [element] dependent pyrophosphokinase IV instead of short, simple ones like Doug.

A muse amuses. It's a conversational (postable) topic, kinda like the weather, only you can't dress up the weather, give it characteristics, hold conversations with it, or say it's taking a vacation in the Bahamas.

Occasionally I use the idea of a "muse" only because it's sort of like writing lingo. So when I say, "I shot and buried my muse in the basement", what I am really trying to say is that, "NO I WILL COOPERATE WITH THE THOUSAND OF CRAZY IDEAS RUNNING THROUGH MY HEAD, THANK YOU". But the thing that worries me the most is when you have people who really do believe their "muses" are characters from whatever fandom they happen to be in. I remember long author's notes from the gundam wing fan where the author was "communicating with her heero-muse or her duo-muse" and it just made me shake my head violently and click my back button continuously.

Yes. *eats your music*

Well, duh, it's all about mental constructs. <3

Eriol: Jae-san can admit that she truly truly wubs me <3333
Shigure: And that she likes hitting on young, innocent girls in short skirts....
Jae:....Or that I'm really as crazy as my family says I am XD Whatevs XD

And muses would be too kind. The voices, as I refer to them, FILL UP SPACE THAT COULD BE DEVOTED TO THINGS THAT MATTER.

Eriol: I can hear j00!
Shigure: Me too!
Jae: That's the point.

What we also draw from this is my self-h8, but don't we all h8 ourselves sometimes?
