Spoilt for good reading
Mar. 31st, 2004 01:57 amI'll, uh, comment and so forth later. Have spent most of the evening reading The King Must Die, which is - insert eloquent praise of choice, for I have none to hand, being too used to inarticulate fangirl ASCII hearts of late. But I always figure I'm the last person on the face of the earth to watch FMA read Mary Renault, so the fact that her books are good shouldn't come as news. ^^; I think this is the best one yet, though; a historical reconstruction and a myth at once, and comes off by that token as one of the best fantasy novels I've ever read, though I'd be surprised if it were intended to be any such.
After which I should have gone to bed, but am poking instead at some of
sesame_seed's Chinese fic recs. XD I figure Chinese-fluent Prince of Tennis fans who read my lj but haven't seen her entry are thin on the ground, but one never knows: read this one first, and if you're not into TeniPuri do it for love of the meta. It's TezuFuji WAFF couched as a terrifyingly convincing fake gameblog/walkthrough of what one might expect, were the makers of S&T, Kiss of Prince etc. to cave entirely to the inevitable and produce a TeniPuri BL dating sim. XD XD XD Oh the glorious meta~~~

Date: 2004-03-31 12:38 am (UTC)don't worry, we'll be the last two people on earth to watch FMA. the more people on my flist rabidly (...RABIDLY >___>;;;) babble about it, the more i fear and less inclined i feel to watch it XD uh. there's also the fact that i've been told not to watch it by the person who burned it for me.
そういえば、 i keep telling myself that i need to read the king must die. i need book recs. since i'm not taking a lit class this semester i feel like i'm floating in a cultural wasteland. XD;;;

Date: 2004-03-31 07:55 am (UTC)But I can't decide if I'm supposed to use it now, or if/when I actually do begin to watch it. XD Perhaps by then I will pass it on to the next person to be the last person on earth, which looks to be

Date: 2004-03-31 08:06 am (UTC)Definitely read that one. Her other books too. <33 I was reading her Alexander Trilogy, Fire From Heaven and The Persian Boy and... what's the last one called... >_> <_< It works better if you have some Greek mythology and National Geographic type knowledge about the Mycenaen/Minoan digs and Earth Goddess worship and so forth, but I can picture someone not even knowing the Theseus-Minotaur-Labyrinth story and just reading the book as a fantasy novel. (Though everyone knows it, I think - it's collective Jungian subconscious. :D)

Date: 2004-03-31 01:48 am (UTC)Never have I cursed my inability to read Chinese (especially when everyone and their dog BUT ME seems to be able to!)(....I guess we all need to be the last person on earth to do something? Yours will be watching FMA--watch it obsess over it with the rest of us--mine will be learning to read Chinese. ^_~) as much as I have right this moment. Because that fic sounds fantastic and like I would completely eat it up, given my love for the beautiful, beautiful meta. Muchless TezuFuji meta. +__+

Date: 2004-03-31 08:47 am (UTC)She wrote a "walkthrough" for FujiMizu as well, and I'm twisted enough to want to play that one more, as you have to abuse Mizuki to make your compatibility go up. XD;;; And you have to watch your compatibility with Yuuta too, whereas with Buchou you seriously can't get yourself invited out by anyone, not once, not even in first year, because Buchou doesn't share. XD;;;;;; And Ryouma is just a pain in the ass no matter what, because all of a sudden in third year he starts off with three gazillion compatibility points with Tezuka, so you have to beat that down no matter if you're gunning for TezuFuji or FujiRyo. Okay, clearly I'm way too easily amused, but you get the idea.
