...The rest of Prince of Tennis was not. >_> <_< As flies to wanton boys are we to the manga gods. To hell with it, though, I'm reading the fic come fire or high spoiler.

That is, as soon as I am able to mark a pause in my ear-steaming fangirl mania over Peace Maker. Dear, dear saints alive. It's just as well I didn't bother to set up phone post this afternoon, or you'd all be afflicted with my hyperventilations in real time, real sound. Or maybe all you'd hear is choking noises, as I run out of superlatives and am reduced to flapping.

I suspect I should get my act together and make some detailed fannish posts on this that and the other (I kind of regret not blogging all my crackpot impressions as I wended my way through the GB anime, y'see; so many st00pid Vagrant Story / Kenshin animation team jokes not saved for posterity), but aaaaarrrrgggghhhh. *flaps* I refuse to believe it's Kurono Nanae's first manga, period: no acolyte is this well-versed in the nittou ryu of Angst and Crack. *deep breathes* Right. Will go watch anime now.

Oh, P.S., other manga I got are Saiyuki Reload (so I can make sure I understand XD) and this other pwetty thing called Youko-Den. As in fox spirit. However, it is more precisely 妖狐伝義経千本桜。 Ohohohohohohoho~ *ojousama laughter trailing off into distance*

P.P.S. Is anyone I know currently reading a <i>proper</i> shounen manga that is universally acknowledged NOT to have teh ghei, either textually or subtextually? I need to recalibrate my brain. Thank you.

My collection of shounen manga consists of Get Backers, Karakurizoushi Ayatsuri Sakon, Rurouni Kenshin, Flame of Recca, and Trigun. (And I keep meaning to pick up some YYH.)

...Kurono cracks me the hell up. XD She was like, "I read that at one point the Shinsengumi were raising pigs in their compound, so I immediately pictured OKITA WITH A KY00T PIGLET!!1!1" She then goes on to complain about how she did one of those what's your gender? livejournal tests and came out 50% male, but if that's so, why the hell do her male charas always end up gay or bi? Etc. ad infinitum.

Well, there's always been subtext. Can't have buddy stories -- or rival stories -- without subtext. It's just that it's gotten a whole lot closer to the surface lately.

...is there ghei in Angelic Layer? If so, I didn't notice; I was too busy trying to figure out where Shouko was getting the crack she was smoking that was making her want me to pair her with Icchan. (But then, I've never been totally convinced that CLAMP-shounen counted.)

I do admit to slashing it in my head occasionally. *g* Mostly, however, BotI frustrates me with its refusal to give me the het I want. Which is rare enough.

I'm... kind of picturing a more shounen shounen manga, though. There's no more Vagabond to read, and in any case Fuji-niisan in TeniPuri is so very much the functional equivalent of Inoue's Yoshioka Seijuro that it now causes me pained (albeit un-BL-related) hilarity to think on the series. Because that would of course make Ryoma the ambidextrous Musashi. (Come to think of it, I suppose Bleach would do. *shuts her ears to the dozen people who have probably just taken a breath to tell her about the Bleach yaoi fandom*)

Well, that's kind of what I mean. Subtext has always been a question of reading, and one is sure (for instance) that one's male friends don't see it at all and think one is on crack. Which is comforting and grounds one, in a way. XD

GetBackers stretches the boundaries nigh on to breaking point. Peace Maker appears well on its way to disregarding said boundaries, with a skip and a bound and a well-you-know-samurai-in-*those*-days. Thus, I need a reg'r shounen series to read. XD;

Having been dragged (kicking and screaming, I tell you) into GB fandom, I plan on staying here for a while, so I've been actively resisting most other shiny shiny new toys, though I am considering investigating PoT... just enough to appreciate the fact that one of my favorite doujinshika is drawing for it. *sheepish*

Since the age of Captain Tsubasa, rare has been the shounen manga without a subtextual fanbase (though it may not be prominent). Heck, even the naked women in Saiyuuyouenden didn't stop the really really gawd awful slash art.

Let me know how the fox manga is. Because with a title like that, it MUST be referencing the bunraku Yoshitsune and the 1000 Cherry Trees which I once saw a bit of. I can send you a translation of that play, should you like. There's a bit about an impostured retainer, a dancing girl named Shizuka, and a drum with fox hide....

It's historical if he's 12. And like, um, possessed by rabid closet shounen-ai freaks. Yeahhhhhh. bah, you must escape this silly idea that you can find shounen manga with no hint of ghei! as someone previously noted, fangirls can find it anywhere. XD I was actually complaining about the ridiculous fangirl gheibait in Dear Boys to Kai Ling the other day.

But, I know what you mean. You want shounen manga that you read and the canon's good enough. Where the idea of "well, they'd make a fun yaoitic pairing" crosses your fangirl mind but you don't bother seeking it out or thinking overmuch about it. Right? (Then again, my fangirl calibration may be off a bit, since I watch/read Trigun in that frame of mind, and apparently most fangirls see it much more sexually than I do. ^^;)

I was going to recommend "berserk" but then I remembered Guts and Griffith's Passionate Male Friendship. It's fucked up and gory and full of military maneuvres but in the end, no fangirl can watch it without thinking "holy shit, they are so fucking gay. GAY GAY GAY." That's because the basic feeling you get is "Griffith, the bishounen genius who could do no wrong, sold his ass to a noble for money when young to raise money (this is canon). Then he went crazy and did a lot of stupid shit that fucked up everyone's lives and killed most of the cast horribly because he thought his 'best friend' Guts, the ONLY PERSON who ever was his real friend that he told things to (no, really) had left him. Okay then. Then he later attempted suicide because his 'best friend' was humping a chick. OKAY THEN."

Uh, anyway.

Shounen manga that don't make me go running for the yaoi doujinshi aisle:

* Bleach (spiritually gifted punk boy becomes shinigami, has cute buddy relationship with badass female shinigami, supporting cast does not suck in any way.)
* GTO (okay, except Ryuji, the BEST FRIEND EVAR who really goes overboard for Onizuka, but he has an oppai girlfriend so, um, he can't be gay, right? We'll ignore his behaviour in Bad Company and Shonan Junai Gumi which even sports-watching het male friends of mine thought was questionable. But there are no prancing faggy girly-men with pet pigs.)
* Island (technically contains a faggy girly-man who is actually gay [and also incredibly badass], but he does not get any, and anyway this manga is so manly and l33t that who cares about some comparitively minor character's sexuality? Get the English version, the translation rules.)
* Violinist of Hamelin/Hameln (... I can't summarize this. It's hilarious, sad, tragic, gory, silly, ridiculous, fun, surprising, angsty, weird, fucked-up, goofy, dorky, dramatic, heart-breaking, EPIC. Uh, and really, really long--37 volumes, I think? Now technically there are a few charas who you go "..." at, and the mangaka loves his "everyone mocks raiel for being gay for hamel even though raiel is the hettest best friend ever" jokes, which are AWESOME and involve the townspeople putting up huge banners and posters with pictures of them about to kiss that say "RAIEL HA HOMO DA", but... it's one of those cases where the mangaka makes the jokes so the fangirls don't have to. Uh, but avoid it if seeing a disturbingly large percentage of the likable cast die would bother you.)

Full Metal Alchemist? ...er, I've only seen the 1st v. of the manga, and what's out of the anime...but slashing Ed and Al would be difficult, because even tho' they're 15 & 14 year old brothers who are fanatically devoted to and living for each other, there's a certain physical impossibility to it. Given that Al is presently the cutest giant scary suit of armor ever.

OTOH there's new chars coming into the picture now and I shouldn't wonder that there's yaoiful possibilities in some of them...
