Cthulhu and Akabane: two great flavours that go together!

...No, I'm not explaining myself. Return to your respective sandboxes, peons.

In other news, it was Tania's birthday party today. We did GB cosplay. I'm not sure why we agreed to this, apart from the fact that T warps reality in her immediate surroundings to her own specifications. There wasn't nearly enough alcohol... Then again all I had to do was wear Ban's shirt (she... made it for me >_>

Then again all I had to do was wear Ban's shirt (she... made it for me >_> <_< ^_^;;;), which as a cosplay outfit is exceeded in comfort only by Ginji's clothes, so it was no great travail.

Also, cheesecake, pizza and Stella Artois. (But what happened to Cedric, Cedric? XD)

Still in vaguely fandom-related rambling - for this is my life away from Real Life fraught with work and dinners out and so-called high culture and keeping up with political happenings, you know me - there's this girl on AMLA swearing that there's more ghei in a single episode of GetBackers than in the entirety of the Earthian OAVs. Which made me flap in vaguely dutiful protest at my screen until I realised that what's obviously needed is a well-calibrated scientific ghei-o-meter, which gives you a proper numerical reading when you hold it up to the screen. Comparison then becomes a matter merely of addition and averages.

How does that compute? Kagetsuya and Chihaya are sleeping together. (by the second OAV series) As much as all the looks and the arm over the shoulder hugs in GB, I don't believe Ban and Ginji have done that in the cannon. Fannon and fan girl wanting aside, I think what actually happens in Earthian contradicts that point.

I don't know if a meter could work to rate this though because so much of the subtle hints that drive shounen fan series into yaoi-land are based on personal interpretation. A guy who doesn't look for the "ghei" can watch Tenipuri and look at the Tezu-Fuji girl drooling next to him and say, "What the heck are you talking about? They're just playing tennis!"

The same can be said for most of Minekura's work, which is never overt with its references. What we do know is that Nii has been seen "pleasuring" Gyokumen, Jien slept with his mother, and Hakkai with Kanon. All the 38, 58, 39, Kou-Doku that people like to write about is just what they want to see more of out of what we get.

Same with Wild Adapter, where nothing physically has been shown between Kubota and Tokitoh in the canon (outside of her color art- no, I'm sure his pants are over there for a some good reason; or her own short fiction on her site- No, I'm sure they're buying condoms for some good reason) but with my Kubotoki glasses on, everything is "rabu-rabu". "Look, he touched his lip. Rabu-Rabu!"

So I think the amount of "ghei" depends on the girl. ^^

My point was that the comparison (or rather, the manner in which the comparison was formulated) was somewhat silly. *g* Of course "ghei" is an intangible; like all other intangibles it would be nice if it could be mathematised. (Or so I tend to think, but useless statistics attract me as a rule.)

The thing with Minekura is... well, authorial intent and context-used-to-interpret-subtext, which is an iffy proposition that depends for significance entirely on what school of lit-analysis one adheres to. But we clue-starved fangirls tend to think it Means Something if the characters are draped over each other with their pants open in the colour art. XD;; (For that matter they do it in the GetBackers colour art as well, which is part of what makes the series an odd critter. Now that it's been picked up by Tokyopop... there's a couple of tankoubon covers that are susceptible to provoking the outrage of the usual sort of parents. ^^;)

No, I agree. I too have stared lovingly at Sanzo and Goku's beer can scene and all of its Great Meaning. But with series that are built around all this intent and subtlety, one can see how a person can read the lounging on top as simply exhausted camaraderie and nothing else. I might not agree with them. (“What? The way he took over the driving was so Rabu-Rabu!”) But I can see where they are coming from. Where as a series like Love Mode, I think I would have to check someone’s glasses if they weren’t noticing all the “ghei”. (“So, if they’re not having sex, what are they doing?” “…The Heimlich maneuver…he was choking on one of those funny chocolates…”)
