kink_bingo. And by "research" I mean "looking at scanned covers of illegal Traci Lords videos and fanart of Major Kusanagi on pixiv"... Last night I actually sat down and wrote out, in a notebook, all the points one would have to touch on just to get some kind of handle on the parameters of Motoko's sexuality. Like, wow, puberty must be fun when doctors shell you like a lobster into a new body that suddenly has secondary sexual characteristics, eh? Or they're nice and let your hypothalamus take the lead. I think it's a fair assumption that Motoko has an organic hypothalamus, which means she can't really be in a male prosthetic body, even if it presents outwardly as male. The female brain needs estradiol like the male brain needs testosterone (actually, both need both), in a feedback loop. And I need to bounce ideas off a biologist or a doctor.
Shirow doesn't go there at all, actually. Like, the manga is No Pants!! All Of The Time!! but it's just, yanno, Naughty Cyborg Girls In Latex Tiem. Whereas a side effect of Motoko having a personality in SAC/the movies is that the not-wearing-pants reads as personal choice rather than extra-textual male gaze, and not so much a baffling personal choice as one that needs parsing. And is never spoken of, because no one in Sec9 will ever, ever ask.
Erm... crossdressing in Aoi Hana is good! Best aspect of Aoi Hana in a way.
