I am not good at this classification system thing; not good at all. I mean, what do you call something like 'Hit Single', exactly? Drama? Angst? Romance? Humour? (I think it's funny, but I'm the only one.) Pick two, any two - is 'Velocity Over Time' more dramatic than angsty? More suspenseful than action-filled? Why do they not have a category for non-romantic s3xx0ring? God only knows there must be enough of it on-site. The summaries are even worse. I'm dreading having to write one for 'Open/Close': I'm going to have enough trouble explaining that one to people who know me.

I also feel like a liar. No way is VoT a mere R.

Damn the tab key to hell.

All you're doing, with VoT, is making the system work for you. I wouldn't rate VoT as an NC-17. It's prominently sexual, but not excessively so - the sex is brief, marked by a graceful economy of descriptors. It pushes the envelope, but it remains within the boundaries of good faith authorial ratings.

Well, I'm glad you think so. (I think. I've certainly been passing it off as an NC-17 all this time...) Actually I uploaded the fic and wrote the above entry before my sinus-clogged brain registered that what was happening was that ff.net was banning NC-17s, and not just that their rating system was messed up, or I would've abstained. Doesn't kill me to keep only my PG fics there; Voles' loss, not mine.

They're really taking the spirit and stuffing out of the fanfiction concept, though. Dodginess and absence of legality are 99% of the fun; if I wanted to court public opinion at large I'd write a real book, or something.

I'd read so many rants about ffnet yesterday, that it didn't occur to me that someone might be talking about something else. ^^;

I didn't trust ffnet's philosophy at the start; it was too open to work, like Napster's. Someone mad a crack that, next thing we see, ffnet will only accept original, in-progress children's books. I'm starting to wonder...
