Baby diary: 51 weeks 1 day
Dec. 5th, 2019 10:21 pm Nearly one year old!
Alan's been a doll this past week. He had a growth spurt toward the end of our Shanghai stay and now looks like an elfin toddler rather than a chubby baby. The flight back was way better too. He sat in (well, excitedly climbed all over) his car seat and even the stroller in the airport. Still had to hold him to sleep but at least he slept... There's a sidebar here about Air Canada's child meals, all of which were kind of weird going and coming, but I won't wade into it. I ended up eating most of them and feeding Alan mine. XD;
Alan's always liked music, but recently he pays active attention for up to 20-25 minutes -- a baby eternity. When he hears something he likes he sways his body from side to side with a big smile (meaning he's particularly pleased), it's a hoot to see. Bebel Gilberto's first album was a big hit, so was a video my mom played of a variety show where Canto-pop stars sang old karaoke standards. On the flight Air Canada gave him a set of (not age-appropriate) freebie toys, including flimsy red over-the-ear headphones for the in-flight entertainment system. We put them on him for a laugh but he really sat there and ate his snack while grooving to music for half an hour. Then he decided he was bored and immediately ate a chunk of earpiece foam. >_> That being said there has been a gradual diminution in the eating of inedible things; and today when he bit me and I got mad at him, he actually understood that I was mad and acted sorry (he would always just laugh before).
That leaves sleep, which has also improved. My dad learnt to put him to sleep by putting him in his crib and patting him on his back (Alan won't allow it from my mom or me). Tonight I had no choice but to let him cry it out, since we're now home alone and I have to shower etc. some time, but he fell asleep around 8:30pm and hasn't fully woken up, despite jet lag and the occasional moan.
The thing about the Wonder Weeks/regression period model is... well, the science is solid as these things go, but if you do the math, the fussy periods are as long or longer than the unfussy ones, and the window for when one will start or end is broad enough to be useless for planning purposes. So it's more like the default state of the child is an unpredictable clingy handful, and just when you've had enough, along comes a sunny well-behaved period to dangle hope. XD;
