Baby diary: 49 weeks
Nov. 20th, 2019 04:22 pmAlan's had a growth spurt and is now wearing the red and black Adidas tracksuit Bing gave him. It's a fairly popular look for boys and girls here, they look like little Mads Mikkelsen cosplayers to me. XD; I got him some basics from Uniqlo and Muji, as I do for myself: a fluffy microfiber vest, a light down jacket, lined pants, striped shirt. He's become much more confident walking with the help of a stool or a chair, though it's more like leaning against it and running around at top speed, bumping into corners (a vision of things to come). I'll have to do another round of childproofing when we get back home, as well as buy a new car seat.
New toys: two teddies (one re-gift, one adopted from Carrefour), a Rilakkuma figurine, a weird noisy thing that walks around on ball-shaped feet. Likes being held in front of the mirror and being turned upside down, leads with his head when he wants me to do it. Likes "head shoulders knees and toes," likewise in front of the mirror. Likes classic flavour haw flakes and the soft egg chive pancakes they make here.
New contretemps: a classic oral contact allergy reaction to, of all things, KUMQUAT. Alan has always chewed on citrus peel with no problems and indeed ate at the kumquat happily for ten seconds before getting super mad, as if it had bitten him back, and becoming red around the mouth. It faded quickly and was not very serious. Still, we'll have plenty to put in his file when he has his one-year checkup.
Other worrisome issue: he gouges himself scratching whenever his diaper is off, so that we've taken to changing him in teams, with one person restraining his arms, and keeping him very clean and moisturized. It's a little easier since #4 comes in pull-ups here, but they certainly won't wash his butt with soap in the sink back at daycare. Still, it seems to me that in the long run, not scratching one's own balls bloody is something one has to learn for oneself. O_O
Alan's sleep is still not very good, though better some nights than others. Now that it's cold he sometimes sleeps quite cozily under layers of blankets and doesn't move about as much. I definitely feel like he's better behaved without me around than with: my dad watched him today while my mom and I were out for lunch with friends, for instance, which incurred a fair amount of anxiety on my dad's part, but Alan gave him no trouble -- ate and napped by himself. When I'm with him he bugs me constantly for breast milk. Whether he's hungry, thirsty, sleepy, upset, or just in need of a mommy refill, he always goes for the breast. He doesn't even suck his thumb or a pacifier. :P I don't know what our relationship will be like when I wean him, or for that matter how to do it, short of letting him stay with his grandparents for a week (which is what my mom suggests). I always assumed I'd breastfeed him until I go back to work, but that's if he's able to tolerate cow's milk and yogurt by then. He still gets enough calories from the breast that eg. if I don't nurse him to sleep he needs to eat a second 8pm dinner instead.
Also, now that he has the daily attention of three grown-ups, he plays us off against each other. He knows that whining to be let out of his crib only works on my mom and me, for instance. And he's learnt to do that thing toddlers do when they don't want to be picked up, throwing their arms up and going limp so you can't get them off the floor. So I'm enjoying Shanghai, but it's time to get the little guy back to a workday schedule.
