Baby diary: 22 weeks
May. 15th, 2019 09:40 pm Alan was 5 months on Mother's Day (May 12). I went with my mom for a massage and spa day, which was helpful - I try to keep my joints mobile, but the number one noise that wakes up the little guy is the creaking of my old ankle bones as I walk around the house. XD;
Progress has been gradual but steady. He basically only "talks" by humming - it's very expressive, but I find it odd he's not making consonants except for "mum"! This week he's starting to stick his tongue out and blow bubbles and make "th" and "dz" type noises. My parents didn't see him for 5-6 days and told me he's able to hold his head up much better when he's carried, swivelling it from side to side to track goings-on. Today I found the same when I put him in the baby carrier. And he's now able to free up his hands to play with a toy while on his tummy. Still not quite ready to sit up in his high chair, even propped -- he slumps. But it doesn't seem to bother him in the short term: he laughs happily when I give him a "ride" on my knees, or variants thereof in yoga class. I'm trying to go weekly now since I suspect this is the golden period: the weather is good, Alan can roll around and have fun looking at the other moms and babies, but he's not so mobile I'm constantly having to corral him.
Another first: he finally swim-kicked his way off his changing mat (it's on the floor), twice. The first time he rolled successfully onto his tummy. The second time he faceplanted. ^^; He sleeps on his side facing away from me, hugging a memory foam pillow, so sooner or later he's going to roll off my (low-rise) bed, in resignation to which I've piled soft stuff in the precise spot to break his fall.
Last week I brought him to the Fine Arts Museum with M. and S., for the Thierry Mugler exhibition. He was a bit scared of the hologram Lady Macbeth all wreathed in smoky blood and flames, but looked attentively at the rest -- I thought he was sleeping in the stroller but he wasn't. We even went to a Chinese restaurant for lunch afterward. So it was a success, but I don't think I'll try to wrangle him and the stroller through the metro system by myself (my closest station isn't accessible =_ =). This afternoon I walked him from Verdun across the canal to Atwater Market, though, and it was a fine and generally pleasant 30 minutes one way, except for the bit where they're constructing the overpass. That means I can go to the farmer's market by myself this summer.

I know the seat got all kinds of complaints for kids falling out of them (they even provided a belt kit later. eyeroll) but I think the key is if you do put it up, don't let your eyes off the kid otherwise it ain't the seat's fault, but that's just me.
Also, I'm so impressed Alan is making distinctive noises at 5 months. If I recall with Jake it was mostly just...noise. I bet Alan will be an early talker :)
