Baby diary: 8 weeks 2 days
Feb. 8th, 2019 12:41 pmFussy week is over [fistbump emoji]! I got three hours of unbroken sleep last night. He also took a few long day naps over the past few, which allowed me to get the newsletter out and work on some backlogged correspondence.
I've mentioned Alan is pretty good sleep-wise. I keep the lights off and the room quiet when I'm up with him at night, as much for my own sleep hygiene as anything else -- no talking or even eye contact -- and he conks right back out after feeding/changing. Then at sunrise he's peppy and happy to see my face looming over his bassinet. XD I start the first night feeding routine at 9pm thereabouts so it gives me 6-7 hours of sleep a night, albeit broken up. What I've realized from this is... my sleep had not been that great for a while, lol. Even before the pregnancy, which had me up at all hours peeing. Drinks in the evenings -- which gave me sinus issues on top of the sleep disruption of the alcohol -- and strongly suspected snoring -- kept waking up with one fist wedged under my head because no pillow was ergonomic enough -- according to my GP, the only fix for snoring/apnea is weight loss (bad news for my dad, who snores like a log but has no weight to lose). Now I'm 15 lbs below my pre-pregnancy weight (thx to breastfeeding), have cut out 95% of all alcohol/caffeine, and my sinuses are the best they've been in years. On top of that I'm staying in my parents' house and the mattress is a LOT better: I guess mine is due for a change.
The upshot is, my worst experience with sleep deprivation is still doing 48-hour MBA case competitions. OTOH, one acquaintance said this: the thing about a baby that sleeps at night is that he's up during the day. But the more he takes an interest in toys/his surroundings, the less onerous that is (until the next fussy period).

New stuff:
The other thing that kept happening was major diaper blow-outs, multiple times daily. =_= When it happened before we switched him up a size, but he's still at the lower range of #2, so now we switched from Pampers to Huggies Little Snugglers, which has a more elasticated waistband and a sort of pocket in the small of the back to hold in the contents. He's... still leaking, a bit, but nowhere the mess it was before.
Louis CK is permanently cancelled, but his joke about vaginas being mysterious until you have a baby daughter is evergreen. Kinda feel that way about scrotums, now.

New stuff:
- Sticks his tongue out, licks his lips.
- Can almost get his knees under him during Tummy Time(tm). You can tell he's becoming dimly dissatisfied with lying on his back and waving his arms and legs around: surely, there is more to life than this? But no reward without effort, little guy.
- Using his hands a bit more. Doing manekineko poses. Eating his fists. Has figured out that he should rub his face with the backsides of his hands and not the pointy ends. Pointy ends reserved for kneading me while feeding, or clawing while angry, like a kitten.
- Eyelashes possibly at maximum length? It was a hoot to watch them grow (he had hair and eyebrows at birth, but no lashes). I suspect his eyes are not very Asian. My dad asked me if Alan was "everything I expected" and I answered that I had expected nothing except what was virtually guaranteed by way of Mendelian inheritance, namely that he would have dark hair/eyes and the non-Asian earwax. The latter is already quite something.

Date: 2019-02-08 08:17 pm (UTC)His facial features really remind me of Bean's (for obvious reasons) including the eyes. If he follows her trajectory, they will end up being blended somewhere in the middle of "Asian" and "not" - people will be able to tell, albeit possibly after prolonged staring.
And you have all my sympathy with the diaper situation. It's sooooo awkward to change sizes, especially pre solid foods. (Eh ... even after, sometimes ... XD)

Date: 2019-02-09 03:04 pm (UTC)The donor is Tunisian (I should probs write something about that process) and afterward when I thought to look I couldn't find anyone of that specific background - finally a colleague showed me a photo of a friend of his who had a Tunisian dad and Chinese mom, and he looked like Vin Diesel. XD;; But half my local friends have biracial babies, one way or another, and my neighbourhood is the kind where you hear half a dozen languages in the playground, so he won't feel too singled out.

Date: 2019-02-09 09:52 pm (UTC)Also the pads!!! I had this thing, which was first used in the crib and then--(when i totally gave up) and migrated Jake into my bed, because HONESTLY--I just ripped off the fitted part and put it under the sheets. 100% waterproof but feels 100% like soft cotton. Magic, I tell you.
