Via [livejournal.com profile] xparrot: ...no, seriously?

I really have no clever commentary to add to this. No, wait: I'm surprised it wasn't Merlin first. But I suppose I've neglected to trawl YTube for clips of the Japanese dub of Supernatural.

I saw this yesterday eve, and I LAUGHED and LAUGHED so very much.

For me, SPN was always going to become an anime/manga - it has all the staples of a shounen (shoujo?) manga series. You have the estranged father, the dead mother, the vengeance angle, demons and angels, heroes as the underdogs, angst, tragedy and a sense of humour, oh, and at the heart of it are two brothers who LOVEs each other more than anything. There is an overall mythos within the storyline itself, interesting reoccurring characters, and honestly, at times I forget that SPN didn't start off life as a shounen/seinen manga.

Oh, and the Japanese fascination with Western religion. I’m honestly surprised it took them this long.

Merlin, on the other hand, I don’t see it happening. It is all very fluffy and cute, but there just isn’t enough depth or interesting enough characters for an anime/manga series. There isn’t enough tragedy.

I am so stupidly excited for this. I wouldn't know if there is any precedent, but I would look forward to more such adaptations (Merlin included).

According to the article, and as far as my knowledge goes, it's the first Japanese anime to be made based on a foreign TV show? There's been Batman stuff (I think?) and the Ghibli movies based on books and such, but yeah, it's breaking new ground.

Don't know how popular Merlin is over there, but SPN was huge, relatively speaking, big enough to warrant its own section in some doujinshi stores (which often would just stick all Western-media-based dj in a single category.)

And in the comments, someone says they won't watch it if Jensen and Jared aren't signed on as VAs lol.

I'm kind of excited for this. The anime could easily be better than the original show - or at least, have higher production values.

They've got the TV series' dub actors for the Japanese, which is standard procedure. And I reckon they will get J&J, because there's no reason not to and plenty of obvious reasons why they would.

I wonder how cheap it would be of me to watch this when it comes out as opposed to actual SPN. I mean it's supposed to be the highlights, right. XD

Did I ever tell you my SPN theory? The one that goes "J&J were so affected by months of gruelling night shoots - because the first season was set entirely at night with no other reoccurring characters - that they internalized the show's message that you can't trust ANYONE else but your co-star"? And then that J&J aren't very good actors**, so you don't truly believe it's the characters who are acting that way?

**Especially compared to the walk-ons, who are great.

But I haven't actually seen the first season, so. ^^

You've told me something along these lines, but I haven't really watched enough SPN to get any firm sense of the actors. XD; (I watched a bit of S2, and it reminded me of early X-Files - not in a bad way but unnervingly - so I stopped.)

What's unnerving about it? Two people (with chemistry lol) are travelling around America looking into weird folkways stuff, exactly the same as on eighty gazillion public access shows, only this one is scripted so the weird stuff actually exists.

Unnerving in that it was like the X-Files - it felt like seeing some sort of clothing choice that was all the rage when you were 14 come back again. XD TOO SOON.
