...And then Simon played a buttload of Ferrat I have to investigate, having stolen his mp3 folder after the fact. XD

The Paradox track (the first on their first album) is a cover of Muriel Dacq's italo disco (? she's Belgian) number, "Tropique" - I got hold of the 12" rip via Googling the songwriting credits listed on the Paradox vinyl, had a brain fart and ended up playing the English version instead of the French. But it's basically the same song.

This was my first adventure in vinyl ripping. XD;; The software at the radio station can't do better than 128kbps, though; the original is a lot punchier and you can hear how the girls are recorded wobblier than the pristine backing track. It's... a really good record, actually.

Tomorrow was going to be all-female bands, as an extension of this theme, but like the Libertines reformed or whatever so I gotta be topical. Given which:

LOL this is like the only movie I was looking forward to this spring? I discovered the awesomeness of this band a few years back (although I have no idea if I ever mentioned it here), so just FTR I'm not there to see Kristen Stewart make out with Dakota Fanning. OK maybe a little. Like 10%

(...They are srsly kind of unheard of. I tried to get ppl to come see this movie with me and they were like "who what" and I was like "we are standing in Foufounes in the middle of a crowd AIR GUITARING TO I LOVE ROCK'N'ROLL at this actual exact moment".)

I have a personal connection to The Runaways, which is why I'm interested in this movie. I went to school (elementary to high school) with Jackie Fox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Fox), one of two bassists with the band.

Fox joined The Runaways shortly before her sixteenth birthday in 1976, making the switch from guitar to bass. A merit scholar, Fox was set for an early entry to UCLA to study mathematics when the opportunity to join the fledgling rock band arose. Fox was "discovered" dancing at the Starwood nightclub by Rodney Bingenheimer, the self-proclaimed 'mayor of the Sunset Strip,' who introduced her to Kim Fowley as the band was on a search for a singer and bass player to replace Peggy Foster.

Fox played with the band on the first two studio albums and the Live in Japan album, and also appears on Flaming Schoolgirls, which contains outtakes from the Queens of Noise recording sessions, and appears on the compilation albums, Neon Angels and Best of the Runaways. She played with the band on two tours of the U.S., one UK tour during which three band members were arrested, and the Japanese tour during which the band's live album was recorded. She left the band near the end of that tour.

I was somewhat upset that she wasn't in the movie, but it turns out that she didn't want to be.

Fox refused to give the rights for her to be portrayed in the 2010 film The Runaways. Instead, the bass player for the band is a fictional character named Robin portrayed by Alia Shawkat.

Well, crap. I'd have loved to have seen her portrayed in the movie.

OMG, that's really cool. XD Yeah, I got the impression there were factions among the band members - I know the other bassist made a documentary a few years ago (have seen clips), but that Joan Jett at least refused to participate. I'm told Lita Ford's involvement (and hence fictional role) in the latest movie is pretty minimal as well.

I love listening to your and Simon's broadcast, not only is the music good, but awesome opportunities to do Mando/Canto listening practice for something that I'm actually interested in.

Glad to be of service, although my Mandarin must be awful listening practice in several ways. XD; I can hardly understand myself sometimes!

(DEAR LORD WHEN DID DAKOTA FANNING GROW UP)

You may feel proud: I am now also well excited about this film. Trailer makes it look AWESOME. :D ('Course, odds are I'll have to wait for the dvd release unless it goes unexpectedly big; prob exactly the sort of thing our single theatre won't bother to bring in... :/)

XD Actually, Dakota looks a lot more jailbaity than the real Cherie Currie, who was sexy in a could-pass-for-drinking-age way.

I haven't seen it yet, but sororial unit says it's great!

I SAW THIS ON FRIDAY! It made me want to see the documentary. The beginning of the movie is good, though, very interesting. I have all these notes to type up. I read about the Runaways in a book on the history of women in punk rock. I didn't know they weren't known... there was an ad for Eclipse before the movie, for all the Twilight fans. Really really funny to imagine all the fifteen year old girls coming to this movie to see Kristin, and developing a huge crush on her-as-Joan-Jett, haha. There's a scene at the end with a bathtub, where you suddenly remember it's Kristin Stewart, but for the rest of the movie, between the clothes, hair, and body language, you seriously forget.

I never saw the whole doc but there used to be pretty big chunks of it up on YTube. Much more of Sandy and Lita and the bassists, obv - actually, I thought the other girls' personalities came out all right in the new movie, but only Cherie and Joan got backstories. And ngl, it's not as if the story is a never-before-seen one, so it could've stood more angles. XD;

Kristin Stewart ttly Brando-ed it up. XD

I was still a little drunk last night when I wrote that, XD.

Only Cherie and Joan got backstories and where-are-they-now blurbs at the end. I thought that was particularly egregious, that the other members don't even get a paragraph!

R and I were discussing how the movie could have fleshed out the other members more. I thought it could have been longer (it's only 1h45min) and she thought they could have cut some of the drug sequences, which after the first couple are "all the same".
