Out of all the options I placed bets with myself on that could have topped Russell T. Davies' revamp of Rainbow Bridge, The Existential Tragedy At The Core of Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi was not one of them.
Ahahahahaha my old reaction post here (http://canis-m.livejournal.com/321660.html). You shoulda been there for the fandom implosion, man, it was galactic.
Haruhi is the story of a brash high school girl who has an existentialist crisis and realizes her own puny ordinariness in the face of the unfeeling universe, to which she responds by rejecting reality and substituting her own (entirely scavenged from skiffy and anime tropes). The joke is that she actually is the God Of All Space-Time and her desire calls said skiffy/anime tropes into being as her friends, and their existence revolves around keeping her happy enough with her mundane reality that she doesn't really reject it for good, which would destroy the universe. AND THEY CAN NEVER TELL HER SHE REALLY IS SPECIAL AND IMPORTANT AFTER ALL.
