Pitas ketchy. (The big Philip Pullman rave/review/essay goes on Pitas.) Needed an excuse to avoid homework all the same - then I remembered that I promised an exposé of my views on variously Most Hated Anime Females. Thank goodness for the cut code. :P

Relena. Big guns first, why don't I. Gundam Wing was a bizarre experience for me in many ways: at the beginning I rooted for Noin and loathed Lady Une, and at the end I found Une fascinating and Noin a terrible annoyance. Relena... fell somewhere in the middle. I took exception to her, but not (I think) for the usual reasons. It didn't bother me that she was an overbred upper-middle-class ojousama subconsciously looking for excitement, or that she'd led too sheltered a life to have much of a sense of self-preservation. The show, after all, was very clear that such was what she was, and there's no law against main characters having their faults. It didn't even bother me much that she chased continually after Heero, if only because Heero very persistently ignored *her* until it became necessary. ^^; No... quite frankly, what bothered me about Relena was that I couldn't stand her politics. Here you have a girl who's perfectly capable of firing a gun or inciting one to be fired in a fit of personal pique, but who has the temerity to insist on a policy of appeasement predicated on her own untested morality. She's presented as an intelligent creature, if prissy and prone to drawing hasty conclusions, but in her "pacifist" grandstanding she adds criminal naivete and a bullheaded dogmatism to those negatives. I was looking forward to (what I thought was) her inevitable political suicide, hopefully accompanied by enlightenment and personal growth - upon which the series started telling me she was right. I threw up my hands and went to watch Fushigi Yuugi. XD Don't understand Gundam Wing, never will understand it, don't think any of the sodding show has a leg to stand on in court.

That being said, Relena is a character with depth, who deserves to be well-written more than she is. *I've* written Relena post-series (unpublished episodes of Demi 2), and it's actually rather fun to explore her character - being as I'm fairly conversant with her type of upbringing, and the individuals it tends to produce.

To go: Miaka, Rinoa, the eternal Tifa vs. Aerith war probably...
