That's fascinating stuff. It'd be really interesting if they did a qualitative study to complement the quantitative data, to ask people how using FB is impacting on their personal networks. I also think maybe some people use FB to avoid more personal forms of communication (email, phone, face to face) for whatever reason, in which case FB usage decreases these other forms of communication and makes the relationship more distant.
It would be really interesting if this type of research is done on LJ, especially the results are compared with FB. I suspect people who write personal stuff in their LJ would have closer / more trusting relationships with their LJ flist than with the majority of their FB "friends", because of the more personal nature of LJ. But then of course, many people use LJ for engaging with fandom rather than for writing about real life stuff, in which case they wouldn't necessarily see people on their flist as trustworthy confidants.
