I guess the meme goes like this?
Feb. 26th, 2009 10:53 pmFrom everywhere: tell me five things you associate with me and I will write about them!
(I have a huge backlog of stuff to review but this makes it easier as I'm supposed to be working on a presentation. XD;)
cis's list:
superpitcher vs michael mayer: I missed them! They DJed here about this time last year and I didn't find out about it until months afterward. =_= The weird thing about listening to these guys now is that mainstream pop's caught up with them - there are tracks on the most recent Britney and Lily Allen albums, I swear... but then they'd probably always thought of themselves as quite pop (Mayer) or indie (Spitcher). Not addressing the versus as I'm not sure what it means. XD;
what to take pictures of: as in, the Right Way? I can only remember that I'd once said the road to Flickr popularity was pretty girls or food. In actuality I don't take half as many photos as I should, and when I do I never upload. Ironically one of my due papers is a brand exercise on Kodak. ^^;
extraordinary redheads: tbh I'm not as much into redheads as I used to be! I don't know if this is a Jung thing or a zeitgeist thing - red hair was much more in fashion a few years ago, wasn't it, there may actually be fewer characters with it now. The other day I was telling T and Lo in the car how market research ascribes meaning to every variety of blonde extant (icy, ash, dirty, platinum, strawberry...) but all shades of ginger are lumped together under a single semiotic banner. It doesn't seem fair. XD
anglophilia (my thoughts): should I stick to music? ^_^; There's something to be said for tradition, basically - UK pop is navel-gazing in the same sense that Chinese poetry is navel-gazing, you wouldn't want everything to work that way but sometimes it's fun to buckle down and acquire a complex system for the sake of it. Actually this past year marks the first time I've made a concerted effort to join all the dots into a single enriched context, it was always piecemeal before.
Right now I'm hanging out on a douban "event", the intended functionality of which has been diverted as a public archive for current and/or vintage images of British ojisan (the sole filtering criteria, though 90s Britpop dominates the discourse in practice). It's one of those fandom artefacts that begin desultory and end legendary. There's something like 3,500-4,000 individual pictures; some were uploaded twice because making fun of them once wasn't enough. The photostream has shown me more than I want to have seen and - with the aid of Wikipedia - taught me more than I need to know. Yet no one seems capable of addressing the hard context questions, such as: why does Liam Gallagher dress like a five year old? Is Justine Frischmann actually the uber-seme? What do you call the opposite of a weeaboo? How come there's all this Japanese fanart of the Ed Banger dudes but none of the Kompakt dudes? Okay, wrong header for that one, but still.
confidence: is a strange thing. I recommend faking it. XD

Date: 2009-02-28 11:03 pm (UTC)I listen to Spitcher more, but I think this is because he's more prolific. (Or is he?)

Date: 2009-03-01 03:09 pm (UTC)i think the characterisation's a little more than nuance: mayer's so mae-muki and spitcher's so sulky (i guess this is the pop/indie divide huh). Fairly sure Mayer was releasing records before Spitcher, and he's done more mix cds etc, but i think of them as quite balanced in terms of releases?

Date: 2009-03-01 08:25 pm (UTC)Mayer's had a longer career, but I think since I started paying attention to them Spitcher's released more individual tracks/remixes, or done so on a more regular basis? It's just the way these things cross my desk as it were. At a certain point it mostly became Supermayer anyway. XD;

Date: 2009-03-02 05:49 am (UTC)The problem w/ that is that the clue usually involves some incredibly nerdy fan idiom and/or stalker minutiae re the band in question, i.e. one feels even more full of FAIL for getting it right than not.
