The new one making the rounds:
a) I want to talk about how my ships and concept of shipping varies with fandom, so name a fandom and I'll discuss what I ship and what shipping means to me in that fandom.
b) I have a lot of fandoms. Have you ever wondered about one of the fandom I sometimes mention on my journal which you don't know of? Ask me any question you want about them!
Not sure how quickly I'll answer, but a steady excuse for procrastination is always good. XD

Date: 2008-10-29 05:31 am (UTC)TEC is a bit more complicated that way. Not sure I can say I'd've liked it better if it were (had been? arguably past!fic would've been interesting) Gwynn/Raule as that would've made it a completely different book. Gwynn/Marriot? Again it's more like "would also read this story" rather than "ship".

Date: 2008-10-29 05:12 am (UTC)The Libertines were a band. The "classic" lineup was comprised of Peter Doherty, Carl BarĂ¢t, John Hassall and Gary Powell, with the first two being the founding members and songwriters. They started up around '98, got big in '02, and dissolved in '04 amid a haze of broken hearts and recrimination. Pete's massive substance abuse problems were generally cited as the major cause (he only very recently ceded the title of Britain's Number One Public Fuckup to Amy Winehouse), but by no means were they the only cause. Both Pete and Carl then formed satellite bands with varying degrees of success, and Pete dated Kate Moss for 2.5 years.
While they lasted they were a pretty good band, of the type that convinces music critics they're witnessing the birth of a new movement in rock'n'roll (we North Americans, of course, were busy bopping to Franz Ferdinand). They were also full of RIDICULOUSLY OVER-THE-TOP HOMOEROTIC DRAMA AND ONLINE WANK, including but not limited to:
* the time Pete broke into Carl's house as an attention-getting ploy and ended up going to jail
* the time Carl self-harmed by bashing his head in against a sink, sent a photo to the music press and claimed he fell in the bathtub
* the fact that Carl has been to hospital with a serious illness every year since
* the fact that Pete has gone to jail for something retarded every year since
* like that time he got arrested for bringing an illegal switchblade into the country as a souvenir from Thailand
* ...for Carl, who has a knife fetish
* the 1,643,229 times Pete posted on his band's fan forum to angst about how Carl didn't love him anymore
* the time the forum changed servers causing all the IP addresses to appear and everyone realized how much Pete sockpuppeted
* the time they wrote a breakup duet about themselves that went to #2 on the UK singles chart
* the other 4,502 angst-filled love songs they wrote about each other
* Pete's Youtube channel
...Actually, Pete kind of edges out Anne Rice as All-Time Worst BNF Of Own Fandom.
The British music press knew that wank and drama sell (see: Blur vs Oasis), but - much as Slam Dunk did for Shounen Jump in the 90s - the Libertines story made them realize that homoerotic drama sells. As with Jump the results have been lolarious, except for when the NME outs LJ RPS fandom to the people who get written about, which is not so lolarious. I've been assuming this is one of those "cultural differences" but I'm out of touch w/ the mainstream so maybe Rolling Stone or Spin is in the habit of showing fic to the members of PATD these days, idk.
Oh, and there is a crapload of fic that is AWESOME, though one generally has to jump through some hoops to get to it (due to necessity of keeping off the music press).

Date: 2008-10-29 01:13 pm (UTC)Spin doesn't have to show members of PATD fic; the fans do it themselves, and members of other bands have been known to comment (favorably!) on fic about themselves or quote pertinent sections on their MySpaces. And that's without even going into the fangirl baiting antics of the BNF Pete on this side of the Atlantic. It is a strange world we live in.

Date: 2008-10-29 07:47 pm (UTC)Oh well if they like it! XD Dudes like Alex Kapranos or Jarvis Cocker you got the impression were always pretty chill. I suspect it is one thing if interpersonal relationships in your band are going well, and another if they're not going so well.

Date: 2008-10-29 05:40 am (UTC)I'm pretty much some combination of Tamaki/Haruhi/Kyouya, however defined (and there are a lot of ways). I haven't gone looking for fic because people on my flist wrote definitive versions of all those, including the massive
I was making fun of this PMV (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=RvCIPpWFo7Y) by calling it "The Ouran High School Host Club Presents: Last Year At Marienbad"... but that made me realize said concept would actually make for an excellent Ouran fic ahaha.

Date: 2008-10-29 05:51 am (UTC)...Actually that's not really true, I've never shipped any version of Hachi's love life because it's just like watching my friends' RL relationships, I can see the trainwrecks coming from around the corner. orz I ship Hachi/Nana, pretty much. I ship Nana/Ren, GOD PUT DOWN THOSE NME BACK COPIES YAZAWA YOU'RE KILLING ME HERE. I ship Reira/Shin wholeheartedly except realistically speaking the odds are stacked and Yazawa doesn't do against-all-odds. I don't ship anyone else but the boys clearly deserve to be happy so if they are I'm all for whatever. I don't ship Ren/Shin but I want one person to write this story well because it deserves to be written (will probably end up doing it myself).
b) JoJo to come. XD
kickin it old school. old-ish school? mid-nineties school.
