Trying to keep up
Mar. 17th, 2008 04:30 amChara - Cherry Cherry: I should be wary of underselling just because I have to make it short. (Do you guys prefer it short?) Those Rilo Kiley tracks are dreamy and and lush and gorgeous, and so is this - despite or perhaps due to it being more or less "Suburbia" by the Pet Shop Boys. Chara BYN, but one can't argue with that rhythm piano; the very Phil Spector-esque vibraphone, that moment when her voice rises and rises over the tom fills.
Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You: Saint Moz, arguably blessed patron of the awkward turtle, intercede for us... A real tour de force, the listener caught between ZOMG YR DOIN IT RONG giggles and wonder that anyone could think to write a song like this let alone pull it off, and the temptation to (close your eyes) freefall into the sonics and never mind the words at all.
I'm developing a thing for songs in which the aural semiotics mirror the lyrical content which then subverts the entire structure. But well, more on this. XD
Where/when/what/how do I shop: at the moment I'm trying not to, because I have no money and no time. XD;; Normally I buy enough pieces every season to make one or two new outfits, then wear them to death. This winter I mixed and matched and dug things out of the back of the closet. I did get a few things at the NYC Uniqlo - two pairs of black tights (one of mine unraveled my first day in the city), a loose black cotton drop-waist t-shirt dress I used as the basis of my lol-tastic raver girl outfit for Nuit Electronik, and a black Tekkon Kinkreet tee. The last outfit I acquired before that was a business-grade pantsuit from Zara, by necessity. Not that I really mind; it's like wearing a school uniform, and the fit is perfect. I'm quite fond of Zara, which is an "it" retailer these days, in and out of b-school case studies (we were told the founding story of Forever 21 on the factory visit Saturday morning, and that was something else). I like Simon's here in Montreal, and American Apparel for some basics, and Muji when I'm in a city that has one - less for clothing, though. I find shoe shopping exasperating because it's more expensive and the odds of getting it wrong are higher, so I can't say I have a favorite store there.
There's not much by way of methodology. XD Sometimes I wade in with a good idea of the manner of item I'm looking for, sometimes it's entirely whim. I don't tend to be attracted to pieces unless they would look good on me. I have way more summer clothes than I have winter clothes, which is partly optimism and partly the fact that winter clothes need to be washed less. I do the bulk of my wardrobe replenishment in Shanghai, where I've actually learnt to haggle well enough not to be laughed right out of the shop. Some items I collect without thinking: I have patterned knee socks from three continents, and scarves too.
