yanno, it really helped that it wasn't told from the POV of a crazy person
This is SO TRUE. I actually couldn't believe it in book one when it turned out to be crazy POV. I was just sitting there staring down at pages of "I wander morose through the forest of dancing bananas" or whatever with all the rave reviews I'd read on LJ flashing though my mind.
I liked Virtu a lot better as well. Sane POV helped. It also helped for me that there was textural acknowledgement from the other charas that Felix was a dick. Which sounds awful when I write it down, but what I mean is, once I realised that everyone was on the same page about Felix, and that I wasn't supposed to think he was awesome or anything, I could just relax and enjoy (if that's the word) him being a dick.
Interesting to read your thoughts on the worldbuilding, because it left me a bit cold -- the way Gideon left you cold, as though everything that wasn't Felix, Mildmay or Sue got short shrift from the author. (Embarrasingly, I had the opposite reaction to you, it was the incest that kept me turning the pages.)
Except the sex isn't hot! I mean, if Felix is All That, he should be having awesome sex, right?? But every time he had sex it was like . . . eiw! Put that away!
