Missed a full-page question on Accounting midterm due to flipping past the page. XD;; Coming to remember why I decided I didn't like school anymore. Why does screwing up at school feel worse than screwing up at work? Work actually counts for something, in the grand scheme of things. Or maybe I just never screwed up that badly at work. Responsibility avoidance has its charms ahaha.

Oh well. Maemuki! In any case seeing something like this puts the effed-up-ness in perspective: there goes the other shoe with a vengeance. >_>

Stuff I have watched recently--

Eastern Promises: caught this one with Erin, Friday before last. T also saw it during the week and said the Russian was credible as long as it stayed under three words per line of dialogue. Which it didn't, but it sounded okay to me, and I hear enough Russian on a weekly basis that I wasn't sure it would. XD Would watch again in order to finally learn what some of those expressions mean from the subtitles.

Though what threw me was hearing the word "vor" all the time, in a context of... well, drunkenness, violence, and toxic masculine pride. Come to think of it.

Actually I would watch it again because it's a great mob thriller, arguably my greatest weakness as film genres go. For Cronenberg (mind that caveat XD;) it's low on characteristic icky aftertaste, if not on gore - can be framed as a Christmas story of sorts in fact. The portrayal of London being entirely and regressively Dickensian despite the gloss of 21st-century demographics. There's a couple of glaring plot holes but that's par for the course.

(If T were here she would say: BUT WHAT ABOUT VIGGO'S ASS?!? Noted, for the record. And the ghei too, because of course there is.)

Black Lagoon 1-10: the Third Law of Fanboy MoƩ Conservation states that a good thing is made better with the addition of a French maid, but that an awesome thing is made awesomer with the addition of a French maid. Such as, for instance, Desperado. Or Terminator. Surely we can all observe that Terminator would have been awesomer if it had involved a French maid, particularly in a combatant role?

As the mission statement of the series itself contains pirates, we will not bestir ourselves to comment on the presence of the latter. XD But seriously, I'm charmed by Revy's psychopathic ways. Anime will let girls wield guns any day of the week, but it shies from showing them actively enjoying it: too hard to walk the sympathy tightrope, presumably.

Haven't seen yet, but from everything I hear, he got the concept kind of wrong, while getting lost in the details. Vory v zakone is *not* any kind of formal "Russian mafia"; it's more of a concept or individual rank of honor than anything actually persistent.

I don't think he was using the phrase to mean "Russian mafia" like what that means in English, actually - well, I'm inferring from context, because I think the one time the phrase was used in full was during an initiation ceremony. I know what the Chinese equivalent concept would be, and it's not the same thing as "Hong Kong triad". So it goes. XD

Mostly the characters use "vor" a lot, roughly in place of "us people".

Well, regarding that news story, the cynical part of me is going, what took them so long?

Incidentally, NHK had a special on last night: yakuza (only we don't call them yakuza, because that gives them too much romance) + keitai = ? Apparently, the networking of the underworld in order to outsource the risk of arrest.

Yeah, it does rather feel like narrative convention demanded this would happen. >_>

I've been meaning to watch it for some time, but we've been working through an extensive backlog. XD Now up to 2006, wonder of wonders.

taking exams is what sucks the most about going back to school. the stress, the anxiety, and the frustration. even more frustrating when you know at work you'd more than adequately compensate for any mistake, but with school, it comes down to a freakin' test that doesn't feel entirely representative of your competency.
hopefully missing that one page didn't totally bomb your exam.

Absolutely. Fun for the whole family. Viggo can be both our Christ and Judas figures combined into one (which would be quite fashionable, considering the popular Gospel of Judas theories going around). It also helps that his name is Nikolai, a derived from the Greek name, which meant "victory of the people."
Anna not only makes for a great Dickensian humble heroine, she's our intercessing Virgin Mary and redeemed Eve all in one (losing one baby and miraculously given another). And we can't leave out the St.Anna, mother of the Virgin, reference.
And of course, little Christine is our pure innocent lamb that needs shepherding from Viggo to rejoin the saved.
I'm just full of all kinds of BS today. Been reading and grading too many student papers. :b

Hopefully not a total bomb, but the exam was one of those tough ones that are designed to be curved. So it would've been nice to have one more question that I could've answered under the belt. But oh well. XD

Viggo can be St. Nick! LAWLZ.

Dude, the terminator robot assassin maid from the future was quite possibly the most metal thing ever to grace the face of an anime.
