I've bolded the sets I definitely want to attend, and asterisked the acts I've never heard (or, if I've heard them, I can't mentally conjure up what they sound like). If you feel any of these bands are worth checking out, let me know! :Dv Saturday afternoon especially is wide open. I'm super-hyped about M.I.A. (the last time she made it to North America her Montreal show with LCD Soundsystem sold out before I got wind of it), and bitter about whoever scheduled Au Revoir Simone at the same time as Martha Wainwright.** I'll also at least check out the big-name acts, just for the hell of it. XD

** If you pay 150$ for tickets to a two-day music festival, during which you can expect to catch a maximum of 8 sets per day (let's say), and two of the acts you want to catch have a scheduling conflict, and on any other given day you would be willing to pay up to 30$ to see either, what is the opportunity cost in dollars of attending one set to the detriment of the other? I'm not sure, but I'm haunted by the thought that it may be on my Economics final.

*twitch* *twitch* Noooo

Am not a fan of calculating cost of opportunity. XD

According to my textbook, they gave a problem much like this to economists attending a conference, and most of them failed to get the right answer. XD;;

XXXXXXXXXXXXD Oh, that's precious.

I get cost of opportunity as a concept, but trying to calculate definite figures of how much you *might* be losing...! It's okay when it's something simple and you have only a few variable-- each attached with a definite price-- but to decide absolutely that the cost of opportunity of going into this business instead of staying with your current job equals $134,394.56 is crazy! How can you possibly know for sure all the results of something that didn't happen! Economists!

Pawa up first and Besnard Lakes are excellent, in a very different way. Thus said, you could be catching them some other time in Montreal.

If you like Mogwai-type stuff, Explosion in the Sky is pretty much as good as it gets.

Best,
J.

Thanks for the tips! Besnard Lakes have been getting loads of buzz, I know; have never heard them but maybe this is a good chance before they go the way of the Arcade Fire. XD; Will check out Myspace or something.

You won't be at the festival, I guess?

Good guess. I'll be catching up on dissertation work on Saturday, and seeing off a friend who's going to France on Sunday. At any rate, I have already seen most of the people I want to see on there, no not much to cry about. (Although it's not like one can overdose on live Feist.)

Enjoy yourself for the both of us?

Cordially,
J.

8 max per day but let's say you only catch 7 sets on Saturday, because then you're seeing 15 sets for $150 which is an easy-to-calculate $10 per set. Okay. So if under normal circumstances you'd pay $30 to see one of these acts, and because the two sets are scheduled at the same time you're missing the chance to see it for $10, that's $20 lost the scheduling conflict.

Assuming this is what "opportunity cost" means. ^^; I don't really know. Another question you could ask is: if there are an average of seven time blocks per day, and I want to see three different bands in a day, what are the odds that two of those bands fall into the same time slot? (Ans: 3/7 each day, so the chance that it will happen on one or both days is (3/7)(3/7)+2*(3/7)*(4/7), or 67.347% -- in other words, it would be stranger if it didn't happen.)

Er yeah. Have fun!

Opportunity cost: I think you're right - that is, I'd give the same answer, after doing my textbook readings for the week. XD (Since the theme is "Do everything I didn't do in undergrad"...)

67.347% -- in other words, it would be stranger if it didn't happen.

Curse your logic! XD Probability has never been my strong suit.

Actually, I messed up on the math. ^^; The chance that two or more acts will fall into the same timeslot on a single day is only 0.388, so the overall chance is only 62.516%.

.388 = 1-(6/7)(5/7). 6/7 is the chance that the second band won't fall into the same timeslot as the first and 5/7 is the chance that the third band won't fall into the same timeslot as the first or second. (6/7)(5/7) is the chance that all three bands will fall into different timeslots. In conclusion, probability is hard.
