Just discovered the mp3 links in this were still up, so for those of you who didn't catch it the first time around: old-skool disco songs sampled by Daft Punk. Some of these tracks are smokin' in their own right, others not so much.

After the concert Ced asked if he was the one who introduced me to Daft Punk. I said No, I was introduced to Daft Punk at the same time everyone else was, but in the three-way conversation that ensued never got around to explaining what that meant in my head.

Daft Punk - Da Funk (Youtube link)

As a teenager, every time I had the opportunity to channel surf cable TV at someone else's house, I would tune to the music channel and watch music videos.[1] Probably over Christmas '96, there was this. It stuck in my mind because - of course - I'd never seen a music video that was actually a short film with music playing in the background, and because it's such a desperately SADFACE little story. What I got out of it was that the protagonist had these mysterious essential qualities - he's a talking dog (but why?), he has a radio attached to his hand (but why??) - that he cannot change, for whatever reason he can't turn off the song any more than he can stop being a dog, and there's this palpable sense of despair, that his helpless truthfulness to himself finally condemns him to isolation. So much for the human condition. XD I also remember wondering if anyone was going to start singing, and bafflement when no one did. I really had no clue what I was hearing. It was probably the first piece of proper "electronica" I'd encountered. Heck, given that both my parents refuse to countenance anything that has electric guitars in, it was probably my introduction to the concept of the wah-wah pedal.

I also got to see the music video to "Around The World" at some point but I didn't like it as much, because it was too abstract and robotic and did not feature emo talking dogs, plus the song is not as hooky as "Da Funk" (which is one of those that get stuck in your head just by saying the title). XD That was probably my introduction to the concept of the vocoder. I had a deprived youth, what of it.

It was, however, thanks to Ced that I first got to hear the entirety of Discovery, and watch the Matsumoto Leiji videos (even though I couldn't get the sound working on the files he gave me, which sort of defeated the point XD;). Like everyone else I'd heard "One More Time" a buttzillion times on the radio but I never knew it was Daft Punk and anyway I hated it. XD Big cheesy jubilant four-to-the-floor pop house is actually one of the last genres of dance music I learnt to appreciate; I need sad dancing robots, is what I keep saying... I love "One More Time" now but I still remember hating it, so prefer "Face To Face" - less baggage. My favorite track on the album is "Aerodynamic", though.

...More on the actual concert in another post. XD

[1] I did this basically up until Youtube was invented, even though people would invariably laugh and point out that music channels don't broadcast music videos anymore. It's still the only reason I turn the TV on in foreign countries and hotel rooms.

I got introduced to Daft Punk by the trendy kids manning the Radio Etudiante in CEGEP. And then, got reacquainted with then-new Discovery, in late university (about the time I gave you that CD with the DP music videos).
