Eighties albums XD
May. 3rd, 2007 02:01 amDavid Bowie - Loving the Alien
David Bowie - Neighborhood Threat
David Bowie - Blue Jean
The funny thing about David Bowie is that the critical consensus really seems to be a consensus. Like, good luck finding Hunky Dory or Young Americans or the Berlin triptych in the library or in used record stores or marked down, ever. Everyone needs their own and is willing to pay for it. It's ridiculous because it's not like it costs three times more to crank out a CD of Low than a CD of Tonight, and I kind of doubt Mr. Jones is getting three times the royalties either. Welcome to the marvelous realm of inelastic demand??? =_= That being said I just paid 26$ for the Japanese reissue of Station to Station that's an exact miniature facsimile of the original LP (complete with "Stereo records give full stereo reproduction..." in tiny text at the bottom), so I'm part of the problem not the solution.
...What I meant to say: whatever people, 80s Bowie was awesome. XD I would've had a way easier time of it if I'd started with the Labyrinth OST and worked backward, instead of starting with Ziggy Stardust (...and Heathen) and working toward the middle. I swear I saw someone on my flist complain recently that there was no bass end to Bowie and I just wanted to cut in and rec. XD Even the Stylus Second Thought pundit seems faintly embarrassed, like he's too inhibited to be all "I loved it when I was 13 and it still sounds great now, so stfu haters" and is instead trying to be a grown-up. Makes for a good balanced review, but well.
Also, I dig the blue outfit (I have never seen the mythical extended version of this and it's not on Youtube).
Mylène Farmer - Vieux Bouc
Mylène Farmer - Maman a tort
Mylène Farmer - Plus grandir
I adore Cendres de Lune. But of course I would. XD Mega-singles aside "Au bout de la nuit" is lovely, "Chloé" is possibly the creepiest song I've ever heard, and "Vieux bouc" is like... well, it has baa-ing noises like "Dessine-moi un mouton"? Except it has baa-ing noises because IT'S ABOUT SATANISM. Early Mylène Farmer is sort of like early CLAMP, with the hardcore.
At one point I went and watched all the old variety-show "performances" (read: lip sync) of "Maman a tort" on Youtube. It was actively painful. The aesthetics of French idol girlpop weren't much different from the Japanese of the period, to give an idea; Mylène was quite young but it still made for the most awkward miscasting ever. Like asking Kate Bush to play burikko. I think Laurent Boutonnat's actual idea was to deconstruct/subvert the lolita thing [1] and she was told not to smile, but that just made it gruesome. XD So he gave up trying to be subtle (see footnote 1) about it, and thus the slash hack and burn of "Plus Grandir" (NOT SAFE FOR WORK OR ANYWHERE ELSE, CONSIDER YOURSELVES WARNED).
Then Mylène went redhead, and they never touched the loli moe angle again... until Alizée. But that was the original concept, see. XD
[1] I mean, if you actually listen to the lyrics... they're clearly from the POV of a young girl, but she's like. Sexually harassing the nurse? And has sociopathically poor impulse control? And you start to wonder why she's in the hospital anyway. XD;
