Last of my concert reviews for a while, unless I try to cover last year's like the bpitch control + Ed Banger event where Apparat smashed his mixer (unconscious rockist gesture: Y/N? Discuss). I'm staying home until Soulwax aka 2manydjs on April 19, which I'm impelled to attend even though I'm getting sick of electro and the beer-fuelled SAT electro crowd. Now I feel like one of those ILM peeps who sneer at anyone who professes a liking for Justice** but what can you do. ^^;

Went with Erin, was supposed to meet up with sororial unit and her friend but couldn't find each other in the crowd (it was sold out of course). Apparently they were in the middle of the mosh pit, a few people-rows behind us. ^^; Erin and I made the tactical error of standing too close to the side speakers, where we learnt that there is such a thing as too much bass. After we got out we were like, NEVER AGAIN. Seriously, the next time I go see an actual band at Metropolis I'm arriving early and parking my butt in the balcony seating. With a book.

Apart from the painful hearing loss - and the long wait - it was a fun show. The band brought a good house DJ as warmup and the VIP box directly above us was occupied by a gang of fabulous drag queens (srsly, who was that - Mado LaMotte?). They also had an "opening act" called Wigs On Sticks which consisted of, uh, wigs on sticks. XD I still haven't figured out if those girl-group songs are authentic oldies or retro parodies ("My Boyfriend Is A Hell's Angel"?).

Scissor Sisters themselves were maniacal and very sparkly. There were stripping, costume changes, and suggestive microphone usage. XD; I'm unfamiliar with most of their second album, which detracted somewhat from the experience, but most of the songs I liked on first hear, the ballads in particular. There was cellphone-waving during "Land of a Thousand Words"... sometimes I'm reminded that my generation rides in the vanguard of a demographic wave. We're the last kids who remember vinyl as the default format for music, the last kids who waved lighters at concerts instead of cellphones, the last kids who graduated high school without having recourse to the Internet, and so forth.

"I Don't Feel Like Dancing" was the encore. I think it's my favorite track of theirs, actually.

Anyway after this sororial unit emailed to inform me that Jake Shears had purportedly slept with Rufus Wainwright, and I was like, wake me up when you pinpoint someone Jake Shears hasn't purportedly slept with (or for that matter, Rufus Wainwright. A Venn diagram for the ages).

** I can take or leave Justice but this I have to say: in the "older than ten years or younger than ten months" world of dance music, why has "We Are Your Friends" NOT DIED YET. Maybe I just feel like this because I first heard the song (and remembered it) back when Simian were an actual rock band opening for Ladytron in early 2003.*** Then a year later, the Justice remix showed up on music blogs. A year after that, Chris Lowe put it on his half of the Pet Shop Boys Back to Mine. Then, in 2006, it... became popular. =_= At this point I expect it to cyclically reappear in a sort of zombie half-life forever.

*** Would this give me cred with the Ed Banger crowd? Do I want to find out?

Oh man, cell phone waving. I thought that was some kind of joke the media made up to diss younger concert goers. Dear lord, I feel old now XD *clings tenaciously to box full of records*

As for mixer smashing, I dunno how UNconscious a rockstar gesture that is. I mean (and keep in mind that I'm living in the middle of nowhere, and my actual club experience is negligible, even though I try to keep up via magazines and internet), there's this convergence of guitar-driven rock and danceable club music. I guess it's only natural for the DJs to start pulling stupid rockstar stunts? (I think I'd cry if I saw someone smashing up a quality mixer, though. Damn. That's just cold.)

He didn't smash it to bits, mind you, just threw it against the floor. XD I gathered that it had been not-working for a while and he finally pulled the plug on the set early out of frustration (though I couldn't actively hear what was wrong). It's the first/only time I've seen a DJ pull a stunt like that but it's also the first time I was at a gig cut short due to technical difficulties, as opposed to starting late.

Cellphone waving, I think, only started in the past two years. It does allow more concertgoers to participate, since less and less people carry lighters. XD

Ah, well, smashing uncooperative equipment, that's allowed XD (This is why the antenna on top of my TV is slightly kinked. Stupid frequency conflicts getting in the way of my Jeopardy watching.)

I suppose cellphone waving is quite a bit safer than using lighters. People on the edges of mosh pits lighting up always made me kind of nervous.
