yo, FFXII fans
Feb. 13th, 2007 10:16 pmOpinions plz:
1) Is "the Dark" in Vagrant Story just... the same thing as "Mist", or what? It would explain something that's always confused me about VS's worldbuilding, namely that not nearly everything mystical-powered in Lea Monde was Dark-aligned - which is what I'd expect if it were a sink of literally-Dark energy like everyone in-game said it was. Kilteans in FFXII don't seem to engage in more necromancy than average ahaha, and as for the Iocus priesthood... there are Light spells in VS too. :x If you collapsed the lot and did sums (i.e. the end of the game) you'd get a Dark alignment overall, I guess, but there are uh. Several historical cities' worth of dead people down there.
It just seems suspiciously easy to map onto the pattern whereby a patriarchal monotheistic religious institution enters the picture and suddenly all signifiers of previous religious/mystical beliefs/practices go from neutral to demonic evil. I don't think there's any such thing in VS as magic that doesn't draw on the Dark.
...I'm not sure if this means Ashley is really a bipedal piece of nethicite, or what. XD;
2) Does this look like Basch and Ashe to you?

It's so hard to tell when they're twenty pixels tall. *squints*

Game's about five seconds away from HIGH SCHOOL AU levels of arbitrary. I do like that Vaan's LPC (Loyal Pirate Crew) is made up of his street homies. YES EVEN THE SURFER CHICK.
Didn't Ba'Gamnan die horribly? I watched it happen. Twice even, because I like that part.

Funnily enough I said that about Tseng and Rufus.

"YOU WERE DEAD!"
"I was fine."
Vaan's all huffy too. Ashe and Basch have these ...Is this a bad time? poses.

Date: 2007-02-14 04:14 am (UTC)I see the catastrophe that turned FFXII into Tactics and then Vagrant Story as strengthening and, well, rendering even more malevolent the Mist. Also, the faiths that crop up between XII and VS are the whitewashing kind, that dismiss anything remotely magical as, well, the opposite of light. I can see the term "Mist" collapsing with antiquity when whatever catacylsm comes, and "Dark" being the one applied when it is "rediscovered".

Date: 2007-02-15 01:15 am (UTC)It's like Lea Monde potentially belongs to the Light as much as to the Dark, but no one conceives of it this way. Now I wonder if the Kildean sect didn't go extinct (from persecution?) so much as it went legit.
I don't know if Nabudis is right going by timeline and geography (both are exceedingly murky - it's about the right latitude, at least), but there's an idea. o_O

Date: 2007-02-14 12:40 pm (UTC)...At any rate. I started wondering if the Occuria, seeing as they look like ghosts or some other variety of undead, might actually be some variety of undead... or rather an amalgamation of many souls who came together in the Dark, probably in some unique circumstance that broke them off from the larger portion of the Dark so that they could form a unique consciousness. Thus they set themselves up as gods, then along comes this one multi-souled being calling him/herself Venat whose souls actually think this is kind of a jerky thing to do...
Anyway. Basch and Ashe. So I want to know where Larsa is. Where's my pixellated little prince? :(
