Off shortly
Oct. 18th, 2006 04:49 pmFlight to Singapore tomorrow morning. Will have to be up early. XD
Went to the aquarium today, followed by Book City. The comics/graphic novel selection is... screened according to rather picturesque criteria? You can't get most manga (longish shounen classics like Conan or Kindaichi yes, shoujo no), but you can get all of Persepolis in translation. Though IIRC the Marxists are the good guys there. XD A point can certainly be made that Japanese shoujo manga are a noxious influence on public mores but a glance through the Korean/Taiwanese/homegrown romance/fantasy/wuxia novel shelves (most of which are trade paperbacks with gorgeous sparkly manga-style covers and/or were re-published from the web with emoticon usage intact and/or are actually Snape/Mary Sue fanfiction with a side of Malfoy angst) makes one feel rather as if the stable door's been closed after the entire herd's run off. No, I'm not getting it as a souvenir, I draw the line at paying money for Potterfic even if it's RMB.
Can't buy books in any case, makes luggage too heavy.
(
moderntime FYI - there is something very much like that military-style jacket you liked at Metersbonwe for 199RMB. Part of their Jay Chou Presents: The Russians Are Coming collection. XD)

Date: 2006-10-18 10:19 pm (UTC)you'll so need to explain this to me when you get back and get to your comments. you're what? you're paying money for potterfic? what is that irony that i'm failing to get here obviously, sabinaaaaaaaaa?
alsoooo, food posts! you positively need to make more food posts. i need more of those, 'cause of masochism rules. have spent an hour (one of the actual and rare highlights of the conference from HELL) lamenting the sad lack of mooncake variety with this chick who moved from Beijing about 6 years ago. which, of course, was brought on by your post a week or so ago about diff kinds of mooncakes. YOU CANNOT GET THOSE HERE. WOE! (or um you can some, but you need to schlep all the way to spadina)

Date: 2006-10-18 10:38 pm (UTC)Whoa, I had no idea that so much fiction was republished from web. If people in the US published things from the web... (the idea becomes vaguely frightening). For some reason I totall had the image that most of the web fiction was BL, though.

Hello there! *smiles* Just dropping by! ; )
