Sep. 2nd, 2006 08:36 pmSSBB entry continues to kick my ass (a bit less sadistically than on Wednesday). Developing a throat tickle much to my disgruntlement - co-worker's had a cough for the past week, celle qui court - but cannot nurse it as am going to the MEG Montreal Ellen Allien & Apparat show tonight (+ Motormark / Ghislain Poirier / Feadz & Uffie (lol), with Sebastian in another room IIRC). Saw two outdoor films at the International Film Festival despite chilly evening weather, helped a friend move apartments. Is the sum of the past few days. :P
In the interest of not disappearing, here is some music.
helvetius sent me the 2CD Moshi Moshi Pop International compilation some weeks back. It revisits bands from
moderntime's Spanish indiepop comp, that Japanese New Order tribute album I gacked from one of you ages upon ages ago, etc. XD It was the week we were discussing single-series fandom vs. genre/subgenre fandom on
worldserpent [1], and while wandering around the Old Port playing these songs to myself it occurred to me that the former is like being a fan of an "album" genre, like indie rock, and the latter is like being a fan of a "single" genre, like techno or... indiepop. At least insofar as my experience of indiepop runs. The sonic genre markers are at least as strong/"stereotypical" as those of minimal techno or BL manga, to the point that the artists gain interchangeability and a certain anonymous quality. Obviously this is not to say one awkwardly-vocalised boy-girl duet jangle is exactly the same as the next shoujo high school comedy, but you know what I mean. XD
Whereas WJ series are like rock bands, there may not be all that much to choose between them in terms of originality but a Franz Ferdinand fan is distinct from a Naruto fan is distinct from a Coldplay fan is distinct from a Bleach fan, just as conceptual entities. Interesting in that there's something of a male/female divide either way (I don't think one approach is better than the other). CLAMP I suppose would be like... Bjork?
...Okay, I'll stop taking up your time.
Aden - Green
B'ehl - This I Know
Barcelona - I've Got The Password To Your Shell Account: for the roffle factor.
Capsule Giants - Evening Star (Unreleased Version): Japanese indiepop.
Doggy - Le Vendeur d'oies du Limousin: French indiepop.
Le Mans - La Balada de la Primavera: Spanish indiepop. Truly, wussiness transcends national borders.
Other tracks:
Telex - Twist à Saint Tropez: thought of this while watching Le Gendarme de St. Tropez yesterday. IIRC the song is old and this is a cover but not sure. It does namecheck Roger Vadim and Brigitte Bardot. XD (Vadim's memoirs was one of my favorite books when I was a kid - I mean like nine years old. Couldn't tell you why. Maybe the girls were just that gorgeous. It must have warped me somehow, if only because I can't imagine it wouldn't warp a kid to be introduced to the concept of lovemaking through the eyes of a libertine 60s Franco-Russian filmmaker.)
Star You Star Me feat. Erlend Oye - A Place In My Heart (Mr. Velcro Fastener Lightning Remix): the Jori Hulkonnen remix keeps going around the flist so here's another one (it was on my Nuriko mix). More ambient and downbeat.
[1] My usage of the new LJ tracking feature amounts to pinning Charmian's entries. XD
