I'm on volume... 44, I think, of JoJo (but I read some of part 5 too). The following is completely random notes I took while reading.
Animal stand users:
Hawk: I have my beady eye on you. For the sake of my master, you must die.
Dog: I gots no bone to pick with your crew, but mofo wanna piece of me, mofo's gonna get it.
Rat: Foooooood.
Cat: Now I will wreak vengeance on you puny humans with my newfound--*golf ball rolls past*--ooh, shiny.
***
JoJo, Miike-style: I'm not even sure how this train of thought started. I blame Mikitaka, or at any rate some je ne sais quoi quality of the humour... er, well, actually can you picture pt.3 done by Miike? You'd get shots of Polnareff through the toilet bowl (pig's eye view?). Also he would change the confrontation between Dio and Hol Horse so that it turns out Vanilla Ice is giving Dio a blow job under the coffee table. You didn't need that mental image at all, but that's more or less the point.

20 Facts is an interesting exercise because it invites the reader to change their perspective w/r/t some character - that is, more explicitly so than regular fanfiction. The trick is to slip the unproven in with the restated.
But there really should be an analogous exercise called 20 Damned Lies. Like,
5. There is no hair under Kujo Jotaro's hat. There is only another fist.
11. Were a stand user to shout "Help me, JoJo!" loudly, the current holder of the JoJo title would instantaneously appear, even if he's in his dressing gown.
12. Jotaro's dressing gown looks exactly like his regular trenchcoat, but in flannel.
Et cetera. (Not really a lie: I think Jotaro must be a happy person, all things considered. Each day that passes is another day that no one drops a steam roller on him, and really, you can't touch that.)
***
Nuclear family: unstable and prone to fissure.
Jonathan: loving dad, dead mum
Dio: abusive dad, dead mum
Joseph: dead dad, absent-presumed-dead mum
Holly: both present and accounted for, shokku
Jotaro: loving mum, absent-ish dad (off on tour for months at a time? note how no one, Jotaro least of all, seems to feel that the dude should come home, or at least be informed that his wife may be dying)
Josuke: loving mum, absent dad (note: not dissimilar to Joseph's own pattern - half raised by grandparent, reunion with birth parent in late teens accompanied by extreme awkwardness)
Giorno: abusive step-dad, abusive mum, real dad... never mind
Other characters who have tragic or aggressively dysfunctional family situations: Polnareff, Okuyasu, Hayato (who was pretty screwed up even before Kira entered his life, though that bath scene was seriously one of the wrongest episodes I have ever encountered in manga - I felt violated for having read it >_>).

So let me get this straight. Taking a direct hit from Gold Experience is... not unlike taking a direct hit from a bong?

Date: 2006-04-21 12:05 am (UTC)Dammit, you are the ruliest person evar. can I use this line when I write up jotaro's profile later? XD
The parents thing is freaky because as you check more and more character histories the patterns are just THERE. Either that or it's like Kakyouin and his (presumably disconnected) parents who were, no doubt, nice people, BUT COULD NOT UNDERSTAND HIS EMO WOE BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT SEE HIEROPHANT GREEN ZOMGGGGGG etc. XD;

"I'm being molested by my granddad's baby momma... but at least it's not a steam roller!"
Et cetera. Gives you some perspective.
Yeah, it seemed like Kakyouin's parents were just sort of clueless (the classic "he was such a good boy, we never saw it coming"). Really it takes less time to list the characters who have warm/okay/stable relationships with their families: Koichi and... uh. :/

Date: 2006-04-21 12:13 am (UTC)And yes, the Kira bath scene is quite possibly the wrongest scene ever in the history of manga. Though there is a scene in Steel Ball Run that comes close...dammit, Araki, why must you be such a freak? XD
(By the way, er, you may not know me but I friended you recently because of your thought-provoking, and more-than-occasionally hilarious, JoJo posts. We always need more people to join our little JoJo cabal!)

Date: 2006-04-21 12:47 am (UTC)Also, let's not forget:
Caesar: Dead mom, dad buggered off for the sake of justice (a theme we'll return to)
All the part 5 guys: dead or unsuitable parents, so that means poor Bruno is stuck with the thankless job of parenting them
Part 6 guys: HEH HEH HEH, you'll see.
Johnny Joestar: dad dumped him like a hot potato when he was dumb enough to get himself paralyzed
It's funny, though; the Joestars who grew up without dads all turn out to be absentee dads themselves! XD;
By the way, you never posted your thoughts on the second half of part 5! You know, Mikitaka and Josuke vs. Rohan, the whole Rohan vs. Josuke thing, the Cheap Trick arc (with the monster on Rohan's back), all the fights against Kira, the ending....c'moooooooon! :D
Also, if you should feel the urge to fic or drabble or whatever...you know...
Now that you mention it, JoJo Miike-style is just...weirdly perfect in my mind. Both Araki and Miike have this love of stylized weirdness and ultraviolence, so they'd go together like bleach and ammonia ♥ ♥

Date: 2006-04-21 03:33 am (UTC)Someone's got to break the pattern of neglect. D: I'm looking to Josuke.
I was actually going to continue the post with my thoughts on part 4 but I had to leave. XD

Date: 2006-04-21 04:35 am (UTC)HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL, WOT.
The trying to con cash out of Rohan bit! SO NOT PATH OF JUSTICE OMG. And it's Rohan, who's a textbook case of the sort of grownup who cannot play board games with little children without making them cry.

Date: 2006-04-21 05:37 am (UTC)But Rohan likes kids, sort of! Well, let's see who he's been known to like in the series:
1) Koichi
2) That damn jankenpon kid (whom you'll meet)
3) Hayato (yes really)
This trend has led to the following conversation:
Ka: ...he's a pedophile.
Puu: Yes, but a pedophile for JUSTICE!
Ka: ...and that makes it okay?!?
I find rohan and josuke's retarded rivalry to be hilarious. Wait until the Highway Star battle! XD

Date: 2006-05-16 02:14 pm (UTC)Now that your posts have caused me to consume parts 1-4
at the speed of starplain two weeks, 20 Damned Lies About Kujo Jotaro (should be more than three D:) is so much more amazing. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ And why does his hat look like it melts into his hair? Does it just cut off in the middle of his head? Is there any analogue of this sort of hat in reality?Does #11 work like "chrestomanci, chrestomanci, chrestomanci" or did you intend something else entirely? ^^;;
