Computer is fixed
Nov. 19th, 2005 08:28 pmI didn't have to reinstall Windows. Um.
LOL?
Noted for posterity, if c:\windows\system32\config\system ever corrupts again for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON:
1) Boot from the Windows XP Setup CD (insert CD, turn on computer, tap F12 then select to boot from DVD drive).
2) Start Recovery Console and log onto the first (should be only) installation of Windows.
3) cd into c:\system~1\_resto~1\. This is where Windows keeps its restore points. Do dir; it should list a different folder for each restore point beginning with RP and ending with a number. Pick a restore point from a date previous to any problems and cd into that folder.
4) Do c:\>copy _registry_machine_system c:\windows\system32\config\system. Select y to copy.
5) Exit the Recovery Console. Windows may actually start!
The lesson here, of course, is never to turn off System Restore. I had it off on Gord's, is why I had no choice but to reinstall even though it was booting.
To be honest I find it quite soothing to talk to Dell Technical Support in India, but those poor guys are so straitlaced by their script that when you end up with one who actually uses lateral thinking to help solve your problem the effect is not unlike conversing with a robot that suddenly develops a soul. Thank you anyhow, "Jay", whereever you are! If I do get a survey I'll be sure to give you top marks!
(Ced, obviously I am still buying you dinner but it will go to early next week as Lo's birthday is tomorrow. *g*)
