Okay I am still backing up data from my hard drive but in the meantime - did anyone actually read the scanned aftertalk to the new Viewfinder tankoubon? Because Yamane-sensei weighs in on the whole Fei Long perceived character thing and *DIES LAUGHING*

Ahaha okay well she actually says enough interesting stuff that it's worth translating in its entirety (I'll do it once my computer is working if no one else does in the interim), but the part I was roffling at:

NT5 - Overseas Feilong fans wept and sent her letters of protest. Japanese Feilong fans ATE IT UP WITH A SPOON. As in his popularity SPIKED and for that survey period he was getting the sort of fanmail normally reserved for Asami.

This is bamboozling. Yamane-sensei herself was completely bamboozled. I roffled so hard it took me two hours to come up with the following spurious theory: the fans in Japan do not read this series because they want Asami and Takaba to eventually resolve their conflicts and grow into a loving relationship. The fans in Japan read this series because they think it's fun to see Takaba being tortured.

ONCE AGAIN JAPAN WINZ TEH CRACK WARZ

Wow! She gets letters from overseas fans? I wonder what she means? Korean and Chinese? I had no idea it was a common thing for mangaka to receive letters from overseas fans; it sorta makes me want to do it.

XD So the reaction here was par for the course? I'm intrigued by this difference between the Japanese fanbase and the international one; maybe the Japanese fans are just ultra-jaded BL readers and have moved into a sadistic phase.

Korean and Chinese, or maybe just Chinese. There's something odd going on there I can predict but can't explain: I'm pretty sure if you did a survey of the people who like Feilong way better than Takaba you'll find a good 75% of them are Chinese. (And I think it has nothing to do with Feilong himself being Chinese - that's merely coincidental.)

I think letters from overseas fans used to be rare a decade ago but nowadays are fairly common. It seems to be mostly Asian fans, though, not Western.

Speaking of ultra-jaded sadistic Japanese readers, remind me to write a blurb about Poison Cherry Drive. >_>

That is fascinating. Well, I like Feilong somewhat better than Takaba in a fangirl way, though I like Takaba quite well, in a "poor kid, he didn't sign up for this" way. Maybe they like his hair better? Who knows.

I guess there's a generation of Asian fans who learned Japanese at a level well enough to communicate in the written forms?

Never heard of it...

Oh man, you're amazing. I didn't mean to guilt you into translating (oh okay, maybe a little) but thank you so so much!

I can't stop laughing. I got no theories, not really, but it sure is funny as hell.

Well, if there was ever a solid piece of scientific evidence that proves that I am destined to move to Japan and spend the rest of my life there, then this is it.

Because that's the same reason that I read Viewfinder too!

.....It's not like it causes him any permanent damage; Takaba just bounces back in the end anyway. ^^;;

P.S. And argh I haven't had time to work on the fic at all the past couple of evenings. ^^; I really do want to move the action out of HK first so... sometime this weekend is my guess.

ooh oh! definitely didn't mean to rush you, here. i know how these things are, rushing is the worst thing you can do for a story. any time, is fabulous. actually, i'm studying this week all week for my exam, and my lj reading is likely to get more sporadic and spastic, so if i'm not replying for a bit, that is why. will have much clearer and useful head after the 28th *g*
