AAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH

...Okay. (This will only be of interest to [livejournal.com profile] dipping_sauce but) I've pinpointed the problem: something's corrupted msimg32.dll, which is a library of elemental GUI functions. Over the weekend it went from working to "not found". Even when I run Windows XP repair from the CD, essentially reinstalling Windows, it refuses to copy that one specific file.

Programs that do not consider msimg32.dll mission-critical work fine. SmartFTP is one of them. Thus everything is currently being backed up to a temp folder on the Dansanna site server in preparation for me reformatting the bloody hard drive and starting from scratch, because I just cannot be arsed. Now taking bets on whether I can get the scanner to work afterward.

Should never have turned off System Restore. (But that was necessary to get Norton working after Danny overwrote it. So really this is all HIS fault. >:E *casts about for scapegoats*)

Did you try SFC apart from Windows Repair? It worked for me once when Repair from the original disk didn't.

Well, now that you mention it I tried it, but it doesn't detect anything at all. ^^; Just asks for the install CD, runs and ends.

If it asks for the install cd then a file was corrupted. You might try copying the I386 folder (http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html) from the Win XP CD to your hard drive and then editing your registry to point to the folder on your drive instead of the CD and see if that works.

:/

(Did you get my folder, too? I had some price lists in there I don't want to lose.)

You wanna do something tomorrow, or will you be busy?

I got it. About the only thing I won't be able to save is my anime, but well. :P

omg, omg, omg, real-life computer problems! We should all become computer plumbers... I've virtually taken over daily operations on my aunt's computer, so before leaving, I promised her to format her computer clean with a new WinXP install (b/c that's the only way my dears, w0rd).

Also, Sa, don't go with the assumption that someone has to do something to screw up a computer. Windows computers will screw up by themselves alright (If you leave a computer with a connection over a network including infected comps, it's a matter of time yours will get infected too).

(Btw, leaked MacOSX for x86 machines anyone? ^_^)
