petroniaOh, by the way? I've run out. This is the last one I have, the next batch won't arrive for a month, and said batch is all side stories anyway. For some bizarre reason I decided a while back that I was going to stop after 20 and read the side stories - I think because most of them seem to take place early on in the continuity anyhow, even that very last one with Chiaki that I read in Chinese on the BBS because I thought it was fic (look, it read like fanfiction okay, the first half was the sort of story I write in which people sit around drinking and talking meaningfully about Renaissance art, and the second half was a Mary Sue pretty much). Plus Sabaku Junkyou, plus the Memorial book. But not for a month. Ah, sweet sweet enforced freedom. I can do something else with my summer!
Volume 20: the running commentary
No, I take that back. Of course I'd go out of my way to feed Naoe. Especially since I'd be very well aware that there's someone else in the house even though the tosser won't let me see hide nor hair of him and in fact insists blankly that he's dead, which if you think about it is really fucking creepy. In the event that no one brings them groceries he would no doubt starve them both into oblivion rather than take a step outside, not that he's eating now because who needs food or for that matter alcohol when you can POP VALIUM LIKE TIC-TACS?
...Yeah, I think Ayugawa sort of exists to be a reader stand-in. Unless it turns out I'm the only person who long ago stopped referring to Naoe as "Naoe" in my head in favour of "Naoe-you-useless-tosser-why-am-I-so-stupid-as-to-even-give-a-shit-about-you", but somehow I don't think so. Also supplying prescription medication is where I draw my aiding-and-abetting-deadbeat-friends line. But seriously, you feel immediately for the guy because for once he reacts to things like... like you'd expect a revived 400-year-old samurai to react.
Ayugawa: *drinking canned coffee* At first I thought WTF this stuff is disgusting, do present-day people have no taste buds, but now I realise it's ADDICTIVE. Dammit, sleep for four hundred years, all the horses turn into METAL BOXES and your best friend turns INSANE AND CREEPY. What is wrong with the world.

Both. And that same way of being dorkily good-hearted while sending his kids out into awful danger. And likely drunk, if history has anything to say about it. (Much of Mirage's setup makes way more sense if you assume Kenshin was drunk at the time.)
