Oh hey, apparently Ren shows up in the latest GB chapter? ♥

(Chapter itself kind of heart-attack-inducing but when is it not, I mean seriously I think the last one that wasn't OMGWTFBBQ SPOILERS was the one in which Rena tried to commit suicide because she bought fake mushrooms made out of mud.)

Am reading volume 28 now. Akabane Kuroudo, thy name is infodump. For some reason it was especially illuminating to read about the original plans for "Babylon Tower" and the connecting underground city after visiting the exhibit at the Canadian Centre of Architecture the night before - Montreal's downtown core is constructed along the same lines. XD It's as if they were building Place Ville-Marie and the malls lining the metro between Peel and McGill, but somehow it all went horribly and mysteriously wrong. And yeah, I can certainly imagine living down there and never seeing daylight.

There are all sorts of little exchanges between Akabane and Himiko. Like when he explains to her about the Queen's Cup, and she takes offense at the idea of women only being trophies for men to fight over even if they're powerful.

Akabane: It's just like a knight of olden times jousting to win the hand of his bride. Besides, the Queen's lover could be a woman too. :D
Himiko: ...*blushes*
Akabane: That's part of the attraction of the event. :D

So pleasant and talkative ahahaha. Oh and it turns out Himiko and Yamato's Crimson Death Perfume is made from the ebola virus. Ow ow ow ow ow.

29 is out already; will be ordering that and PMK 5 tonight, and some of that Higuri Yuu crack I think - I saw Ludwig II in the French bookstore the other day but it was 16$. Who the hell publishes manga at 16$ a pop? Though nowadays when I browse the manga shelves in Renaud-Bray my reaction is less "Oi, that's out in French?" and more "Oi, that exists?" Did you know Watase Yuu was writing a Genbu-centric prequel to Fushigi Yuugi? Neither did I!

I knew too...about the Yuu Watase manga. But because last time I was in Japan I bought them and pretty much every other thing she ever worked on. >.>;

Genbu-centric prequel to Fushigi Yuugi

I knew. In fact everyone else knew about this and wasn't telling you. (Haven't read it on account of I don't much care for Watase Yuu manga, when you get right down to it.)

*weeps* Apparently so!

Though push comes to shove I don't know if I want to read it. ^^;

Okay, you still need to explain PMK to me so the manga I have MAKES SENSE.

And for $16 manga, well, I paid $19 per volume for Planetes and it was worth it ^^;;; Renaud-Bray seems to have two pricing schemes for manga, $13 for the regular-sized, black and white stuff, and $19 for anything with colour plates or oversized, or both.

Casterman, fr'ex, is putting out a lot of good, adult stuff in the slightly oversized format. i picked up La Musique de Marie, which was really good.

I saw that! I thought it was just a re-issue, until I read the back cover. Who or what is Genbu?

Genbu is one of the Four Gods of which Suzaku and Seiryuu are two (and Byakko is the fourth). It's the story of Genbu no Miko and her Shichiseishi, stuff that took place before the original FY storyline (we met two of the Genbu warriors in episodes 34-36 or thereabouts of the TV series, vol 9 of the original manga, guarding the first Shinzaho).

The easiest way is probably to rent the PMK anime. ^^; That and google up a little on the history. The manga definitely expects the reader to know about certain historical events, and (perhaps more critically) where the storyline takes off from said historical events, so.

Ah, well, yeah, the big chunky graphic-novels-for-adults sort of manga. ^^; But I don't think Higuri Yuu should be that expensive. Mind you I complain enough about Bleach being 13$ given that Nana etc. are 10$. :P

There are Four Gods in the Fushigi Yuugi universe, and each god chooses a miko (priestess), but not at the same time. In the original FY storyline Miaka was the miko of Suzuku, and the only other miko within living memory was the last miko of Genbu, who crossed into the Four Gods-verse circa... WWII, I think?... Japan-time. Hence the story of Genbu's miko is a prequel to the original FY.

Eh?

Did you get the Planetes manga in French?

Yep. I prefer buying my manga in French, frankly. Better translated, better-looking books, timelier releases...

Ren?!?

(Dammit, need to write more of Opening The Way.)

I love love love GetBackers. It just keeps on getting better and better.

And Akabane and Himiko . . . oh, _hee_. Must try and use that somewhere.

Incidentally, the first of the Genbu ones is out in French (I have it) and isn't bad. At least, has yet to get as self-indulgent as later Fushigi Yugi. All three volumes of Ludwig II are also out in French, and on my shelf. ;)

Was funny to see you mention Renaud-Bray since I went there tonight after work (quite a walk up) to buy Monster (vols. 2&3)... amazing it's all out in French (all 18 vols.) when it's not even available in English yet...

And I saw lots of manga on the shelves I did not even know where available in any language O.O... Shows that the French/Belgian publishers are very in advance in the manga market and contrary to the US boom, they don't seem to flood the market so the books/publishers should be around for a while...

don't mind me, just passing through

An underground/indoor city you never need to leave was also the inspiration for waydowntown (http://www.waydowntown.com/). Canadian movie, two officemates stake a month's salary on who can stay indoors the longest. By the end they've both been driven nuts, but what boggled me was that this was possible at all. I mean, I've heard of Toronto and Montreal, but Calgary?
